A recent motor accident when four Territorials, on their way io Taknpau, w.ora overturned ami injured near Palmers ton North, was tho subject of a Court case on Monday when the driver, Irwin Baldwin, was charged with negligent driving. Witnesses' estimated accused's speed at 20 miles to 'lii miles per hour, which they considered very dangerous for a road with many sharp turns in it. On tho other hand"defendant and two of the territorials testified that tho speed was net excessive and that a trap, beside, which the car was. overturned, was on its wrong side, of tho road. Mr. Poynton, S.M., held that nogligonco had been proved, hut, in view of defendant's own injuries, he only imposed the pavment of costs, £1 os.
W. B. Farrow, who was recently injured at Kelvin Grove crossing, where n, train struck Ids mofcor*cyelo and sidecar, was yesterday prosecuted for crossing in front of the train, but, in consideration of his injuries, was fined only 10s. and costs lis. .'
At_ tho Juvenile Court on Monday a Maori lad, aged 15, who escaped from tho Woreroa Training Farm, was charged with thrco offences, namely, (1) stealing clothes, a gun, watch, chain, and sovereign ease, the propertv of Arthur 0 Kccfes, of Linton ; 02) -stealing clothes and other articles of a value of £4 6s. .6d., from John Diinoghtie, at Longburn ; Y> w ea l ulK &H 14i - tn6 property of J. W.. Lougbhn, of Palmwston. ' Ho was convicted on tlra first two charges, and committed to tho Burnham Industrial School.

A new footbridge has been erected across tho Bautapu Biver, near the power-house. Owing to the number of landslides which ticcnr in wet weather tho road leading to the power-house is unsafe, and a track has been formed through tho bush en the opposite side of the river from the main road to the bridge.
Timber traffic has been prohibited on somo of the district, roads, and the mills affected have closed down for the winter.
At - the annual meeting of tho parishioners of St. Margaret's Anglican' Clnirjjh, tho commit-too appointed, to deal with the question of acquiring laud adjacent to the church reported that Mr. J. F. Studholnw had offered to purchaso the land from the Rev. P. W. Clarkson for £490, and the church could havo the free u.sb of the kiwi for five years, with the option of purchasing it at the end of the term at tho original price. Mr. Studhoifne Was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. Tho dispute, between : the Taibapo Volunteer Fire Brigade and tho Borough .Council has been settled to tlio satisfaction of- a-lij parties 4lte brigaflo agreeing to resume duty '.if the annual subsidy was increased and new urnforms provided. , At a meeting of the Taihape Borough Council on Friday it was decided that .totters from the Railway Department in rererenco to ttse supply of water and electric light be held over for further, consideration. An amendment to tli<> effect that the Department be notified that water, would bo supplied at the pleasuro of the council, and light at what the council considered to' he i fair and reasonable price, was hast on the casting vote of tho Mayor. _ The revenue derived from the municipal light and power scheme for tlio : year was £1503 12s. 4d., and the expenditure £1098 Is. 4d., tho profit on the year's working amounting to 2405 lis.
MASTERTQN
About two hundred teachers went into camp at Mastertoii on Monday for a fortnight's course in physical training. Tho conditions are unfavourable, a cold southerly rain having set in. The teachers, however, appear to bo reconciled to tho situation, and have already, entered into this spirit of the camp. In. the assembly halt of the District High School on Monday morning the teachers wore given a civic welcome bv the Mayor (Mr. J. M. Coradine), Mr. Ci, R, Sykes, M.P., and Mr. A. W. Hogg, member of tho Education Board. Messrs. Boyd Garlick and Coombs acknowledged tho welcome given. Th& work of the camp was afterwards outlined by Mr. Garlic's,: and:the- instructors then began their work. '
Complete, arrangements have been made for the collie dog trials, which aro to bo held here next.week. Not the least interesting event will be a competition in the handling' of ft dog between tho Mayor and Mr. G. B. Svkes, M.P. ' :
The painters and paper/hangers of the Masterton district havo decided to form a union. Rules have been prepared, and it is tho intention to 'register under the Arbitration Act, Tlio employers are to be asked to meet representatives of. the union at a conference, to deal with demands that are being made.. •
A bogy competition was held by theMasterton Golf Club ©n Saturday last!' The best card banded in for the A Grade was that of Mr, M. Foley, and.for the B Grade that of Mr. F. W. Poynton. '
Tlie Masterton Homing Pigeon Club flew a derby race from Blenheim on Saturday last. The winning bird was Mr. M. Wilton's "Oh My."
The Rev. H. Braddock, lion, missioner (late - of the Children's Special Service Mission, London), has just spent a week here. He visited the Main School every afternoon and La.iisd.ovme every morning. Voluntary attendances nv-erisged 400 daily, and very keen interest was shown by the young people, and the teachers showed sympathy and appreciation. Mr. Braddock hopes now to spend a few months again amongst tlie Wellington City and suburban schools. His work last year will doubtless be recalled in the Mount Cook, Normal, Clyde Quay, Newtown, J'terlmnipore-. Karori, Roselieath, and Island Bay State schools, attended by some, 2500 children.

At tho Foathorston County .Council meeting on Friday, Councillor Matthews' proposed and Councillor Martin seconded, that tho ordinary general fate to be struck bo -Jd. As an amendment. Councillor Perry proposed that the rate be 5-Bd, (llib siinio as last year), and tho chairman seconded the amendment, pronforma. On being put to the meeting, tho amendment was-lost, and tho rate of id. was carried.
H is expected that the road-making machinery, ordered by the Featherston County Council, will arrive during this month.
PAHIATUA,
Tlie Akitio County Council, at its meeting in Pongaron last Saturday, expressed sympathy with the Wellington Chamber of Commerce's suggestion to hold a conference, of local bodies and Chambers of Conmiereo in the Wellingtoil province to discuss opening up the East Coast lands, branch railways', and deviations and back-blocks roads. It was also decided to suggest that .the Pongaroa' Railway League and tho Pongaroa Ctiamber of Gommerco should send delegates to tho conference. The Akitio River Month Bridge', in tile Akitio County, is expected to be completed in two weeks. At Saturday's meeting of the Akitio County Council it wa-a decided to invito the Prime Minister (the Right Hon, W, F. Massey) to prrform tiio opening- ceremony, which will probably take place, in about three weeks' time. It was decided to invite Messrs. J.H. Escntt and G. B. Svkes, M.IVs, and as many of the Cabinet Ministers who were, able to attend. When completed tho structure, which istho largest in tho county, will connect the flannevirke and Paliiatnay-Kkotahuna Roads. _ It will also prove of great benefit if the proposed freezing works- at Akitio are erected in the near future.
