THE FRUIT INDUSTRY

■~ ■- Q .■ "There is probably ho industry in tlie Dominion which has shown _ greater possibility of development during tho pasf. two or three years than the fruit industry," says the annual report of tho Chamber of Commerce. '"In the Nelson'district and in other districts it has been proved that lauds which wore previously thought of little value are eminently suitable for apple-growing; and in Nelson, Moulerc, jlotueka, and surrounding districts some hundreds of acres have been brought under cultivation for apple and fruit growing. "Shipments of apples and pears have been sent both to London and to South American ports, and many inquiries have been received from Western Pacific ports for New Zealand apples. It will be necessary, to ensure tho-success of the industry, that the class of apple suitable for the market is grown, and that the 'apples be properly graded and packed. "The Government, in passing the Fruit .Preserving Industry Act, evidently re. alises the importance of the industry, and is prepared to assist it in emj reasonable way."
