THE AMOUNT OF THE SURPLUS. A detailed statement of tlio national revenue and expenditure for thd financial year 1913-14 will not be mado public, tho Hon. Jns. Minister, .however, supplied some detailed particulars :egnrdiiig the revenue for the year. livery item of revenue, Mr. Allen Stated, shows an increase over tho pre-vious-year except Territorial revenuo, and this item also would havo shown an increase but for tho fact that money derived from tlio cash sales of land is now paid direct into tho land settlement account, and is not treated as revenue. Owing, to tins course Territorial revenue shows a decreaso of £64,000. The amount which has thus, been paid into the land settlement account instoad of into tho Consolidated 'Fund, amounts, Mr. Allen stated, to £80,000 or £90,000. ■Ir ho had treated this amount as rovenuo, territorial revenue would of courso havo shown an increase and tho surplus for tho year would have boon so much greater, Undor provious Administrations proceeds from cash land sales navo been treated as revenue and have gone to swell tho annual surplus. llio surplusi for tho year just ended amounted to £427,000.
