l SOME SPLENDID FOOTBALL ON BASIN RESERVE. 'Chnnir.ionship matches under the jurisdiction of tho Wellington Football Association wero continued on Saturc day afternoon, and soino excellent y games vero witnessed. A crowd of hc- >- tween'6oo and 700 peoplo gathered on y tho Basin Reserve to watch the "go" n between Thistles and Hospital. It was i- a splendid match, interesting from tho ;- kick-off, and anybody's game right up i, till tho call of time. It ended in a - draw—a fitting conclusion to one of the 0 best cup matches which has boon seen ■- in Wellington. The proceeds go to- '- wards tho Upper Hutt ilelief Fund. On account of tho Potone ground being unfit for play, the Wandcrcrs-Petono fixture had to bo postponed. Diamonds defeated Rovors rather easily, and Corinthi--1 ans and Swifts played a drawn game •1 on tho new ground ot Kilbirnic. Folj- lowing aro tlio results of the matchos: — Hospital ....2 Thistle 2 Corinthians ... 0 Swifts 0 - Diamonds 4 Rovers 0 3 Brooklyn United, a bye. • HOSPITAL—THISTLE. J As indicated above, splendid yfootball ' was seen in the match Thistle v. Hospital. Both teams were out to win, and tho result was a good, hard, sporting game. From tho outset it was plainly : seen that the teams were evenly rnatchi ed, but Thistle, playing with the wind, 1 made the pace. For some time it ap- ' peared as though Hospital were a littlo handicapped by having to play on a strange ground, but later in the game thoy dovcloped their true form. After about half an hour of strenuous football Thistle's chance came. .They penned tho visitors in their goal-mouth and Cross, Hospital's' left-back, in endeavouring to clear, hit tho ball with hi-s arm, and immediately tlie call • "hands" was heard. Tho referee or- . derod a penalty kick, and Edwards, tak- , ing tho shot, landed the ball in the not • amidst excitement. This reverse seemed . t<i put Hospital on their mottle, and : they bombarded tho Blues' citadel in great style, but W. M'Ardle was always i equal to tho demands made upon him . and saved several shots amidst well-de-served applause. On one occasion, just before lialf-timo was called, he saved , magnificently, and tho crowd went wild \ with excitement. Hospital ats tacking strongly, and the ball was sent , out to Heatli on tho right. Ho took l it down tho lino in fine style., and cen- [ tred to Skinner in front of goal. The i latter shot at closo range, but M'Ardlo , was there ready. Once again Skinner \ secured-the ball, and again ho sent it ' flying towards the goal. M'Ardlo flung I himself right across the goal-mouth, and ' was successful in tipping the shot round the post. It was a fine pieco of work. : j In the second half sides played with rare combination. Thistle commenced the attack, and within a few " minutes n score came. Marshall (Thistle's fleet outside right) secured, j and took the ball down tho wing, passing to Ferguson (centre-forward) at the ' .right moment, and the latter gave Cobbo ' (Hospital's goal-keeper) ho chance. Tho s ecoro then'road: Thistle, 2 goals; Hos- ' pital, nil. Play now became very fast, ' and it was seen that Thistle were not [ in such condition to last as'tlio-Porirnn men the greater part,o£,tlie 1 spell, thejv.adopjfld ».,'defenstvq ;garao, and try as they would Hospital could \ not break it down, M'Ardle being brilliant as custodian of the goal. At last, however, the visitors' chance came. Skin--1 nor .took, advatytago of a good opening, and centred nicely, and Heath, being handy, put on the finishing touches. ' Hospital again attacked strongly, and • Thistle defended just as strenuously. ' Excitement rose as the end was approaching, and tho crowd cheered the > players time and again. Tho men from 1 Porirua went at it in good style, but Thistle were resourceful, and packed I their goal. It looked as , though the > Blues would win when Hospital made ' a determined attack down the centre. : Their splendid forwards took all before 1 them, and this sensational piece of play ' was ended by Roots sending in a eapi--1 tal drive which gave M'Ardle no chance. • Hospital, 2; Thostle. 2. Mr. Lithgow 1 jvas referee. SWIFTS—CORINTHIANS. 1 It was generally expected that Corinthians would account for Swifts on the new ground at South Kilbirnie, but-it was not to be, and, after a strenuous game, thero was no score on either side-. Corinthians, who w<>nt on the field minus two oF their best men, made the pace from tho start, and on several occasions looked like scoring. The Reds, however, stared off defeat in good stylo. Corinthians wero much the better team and showed clearly that thoy knew more about tho gamo than tlieir opponents. Had thoy jiad their best team in the field thero would not have been any doubt as to who would have been winners. Mr. J. M. Wilson was referee. DIAMONDS—ROVERS. ■ Duppa Street was the scene of a conflict between old rivals on Saturday afternoon, when Diamonds defeated Rovers by 4 goals to nil. A strong 1 "southerly wind was Blowing, and made the game somowhat uninteresting. Rovers attacked strongly at the outset, and although the Blacks had the advantago of the wind they could not ' keep their opponents off. Rovers, how--1 ever, appeared unable to top off their efforts with scores. After several attempts, Diamond's chanco came, and Schofield scored. A little later Black was responsible for a second goal. Rovers wore playing much the better game, btit tho wind interfered with their combination. On the other hand, Diamonds wero not playing up to repu- ' tation, and it was a wonder sometimes that Rovers did not score. Shortly before half-time, A. Lowe (Diamonds) ' secured the ball, nnd put in a long shot, which beat Rover's goal-keeper ' mid tho score thon was: Diamonds, 3; Rovers, nil. ; In the second spell, Diamonds played ' much better football, and kept Rovers strictly on tho defensive. On two or , threo occasions the latter team looked like sco/ing, however; but bad shooting spoilt excellent chances. About halfi way through the spell a melee occurred in front of Rovers' goal, from which Shaw put the ball through. There was no further score, and tlio game ended: Diamonds, 4; Rovers, nil. ,Mr. S. F. M'Lean was referee. . JUNIOR DIVISION. The following arc the results of the ' Junior Division matches played on Saturday afternoon:— 1 second Division. ' St. Davids 3, Diamonds nil.
