AMBULANCE SATURDAY

♦ . i COLLECTION TOTALS £95 BIG DROP FROM LAST YEAR j > Broken weather interfered with the . succoss of the ambulance colldction L taken up on Saturday, and the result was somewhat disapointing. Over forty I collectors worked early and late in the , city streets and at Hataitai, Lyall Bay, Seatoun, and other suburbs, but the total collection realised only £95 13s. " lid., as compared with £225 4s. 7d., , which was the. amount taken up in No- ; voinber last year. It is hoped, how- 1 j ever, that the proceeds from Saturday's . collection may bo augmented as a re- , suit of local collections in other parts ' of tho Wellington district. The collectors are entitled to credit for tho ; way in which they stuck to their volunteer task in cold and ■unpleasant weather, and it is not their fault that the funds of the local centre of the St. John Ambulance Association have not benefited to a larger extent. No.doubt Uio numerous calls that have lately boon made upon the public for financial assistance; together with the state of the weather on Saturday, sufficiently .accounts for the comparatively poor resppnse made to the appeal of the Anibulanco Centre. Ono rather pleasant' feature of Saturday's collection was that bad money 'ind worthless substitutes for money wore little in Evidence. Save for n couple of small tin discs and a cardboard half-sovereign, only current coin of the realm was put into the boxes. The. collection of £95 13s. lid. was made up as follows:—Five sovereigns, six half-sovereigns, forty half-crowns, one hundred florins, seven hundred shillings, eight hundred sixpences, seven hundred and twenty, threepenny pieces, 1352 coppers and unclassified silver to Jhe amonnt ofc £3 Is. 3d. Packed into a small portmanteau, the total collection made more than a comfortable load for one man. A party of six collectors, headed by Nursing Sister Robieson, who worked Lambton Quay from Stewart Dawson's Corner to the Government Buildings, collected no less than £37 3s. 2d. during the day. Just over forty collectors were nt work, and a number of other people attended at the Town Hall to lend as-' sistance in receiving tho money, providing refreshments, and in other ways. Tho Mayoress (Mrs. J. P. Luke) was at the #own Hall during the greater parti of tlje day. The money as if was brought in by the collectors was received by the following • members of the committee of the Ambulance Association: Messrs.. C. P. Powles (chairman), H. B. Bainbridgo (secretary). H. -H. 'Seed,,J. A. Nicol. Mr. J. D. Avery, late secretary to the , centre, was also present, and assisted.; ■ Following is a list of the collectors: Mesdames D. Campbell. Wallace, Baker, Ray. Wallis, Reid, Osbome, Misses C. Bainbridge, B. Luke, M. Greenwood, M. Lemon, Probyn, Wallace (2), Carroll, Hawson, M'Gibbon, L. Young, D. Young, Mack, Nicholas, A.Forbes, Robiesou, H.
