c JOTTINGS FROM PROVINCIA L .CENTRES. (From Our Spucial CoMssscndeSta - MASTERTON. The annual meeting of the Masterton Gun Club Mas held ou Wednesday evening. Wairarapa teachers, to the number of about two hundred, will engage in a fortnight's physical training at Masterton, commencing 011 Monday, jiext. Fiyo instructors will be engaged, and Mr. lioyd Garlick will ba present on the opening day. The male teachers will camp 011 the old showground. The Rev. A. Hodge, Congregational minister of Napier, and'formerly of this town, is at present on a visit to Masterton. The'classes organised by the Masterton division of the St. John Ambulance Brigade will commence training tinder Dr. Prior as soon as the text hooks arrive. Tho classes will be held on 'Wednesday evenings, and will continue until the end of September. The children of St. Patrick's School assembled yesterday to say good-bye to tho Rev. Father Harnett. They also presented him with an address. The Masterton Fire Brigade has decided to hold its annual dinner nest month. _ The MSsterton Poultry, Piqyon, and Cage Bird Association has been allotted the championships for New Zeafend fci the classes for Plymouth Kncks, White Leghorns (including utility birds), campines, finches, and mules. Tho Masterton Amateur Theatrical Society will shortly stage "The Country Girl." The casto has alreadv been tentatively allotted.

The weekly competition of the Kaitawa Ladies' Miniature ltiilo Club was evenly contested on Wednesday, and the scores were creditable. The competition was tlio >last for Air. 0, Ata-nsou's trophy, and was combined with the first lor a trophy donated by Miss L. J. Ross, lliss N. Korridge was the wiener of Air. Alanson's trophy. Korridge, 32; L Ross, 32. Ilic settlers of tho Mangatainqkii Block are desirous of having a school in the settlement. A committee has been set up with instructions to make representations to tho Wellington iildtieatioii Board. One of the settlers has offered portion of a new building for nso until such time as a school is creetect, and the Wellington Education Board'is to be asked to appoint a teacher if tho 'building offered is satisfactory. ' A return match, eight moit aside, between tho Kaitawa-Rongomai and the Pahiatua Riflo Clubs took nlsco at tho former club's range on Weuiiesday, and resulted in a win for tho home team by 12 points. The scores were as follow Kaitawa-Rongomai, 497; Pahiatua, 485. Mr. l'\ Bolton, of tho Pahiatua team, scored tho only "possible" in tire matcli. During Air. A. M'Farlane's absence in England Mr. H. Croad will act as chairman of the Ballanco Dairy Company. During the past year the sum-of £102 12s. 2d. was soant in ground iniprore- • inents at the Pahiatua District High School. Tho official opening of the newlyformed Golf Club at Hamua took plaeo yesterday afternoon. The following officers wero elected at a meeting held this week: —Patron, Sir. Watcmhau ; president, Air. H. Watchman's property, are considered to bo very suitable for golf, A local firm of follmongers has received an order for 1000 bales of crutchings from Japan. The annual meeting of the PahiatuaAkitio A. and P. Association will be held next week. A lecture on tho White Slave "traffic was giver, in Pahiatua this week by Afiss Austen.

A meeting of football players was lieltl on Wednesday evening; when it was decided to form a junior chtb. Tlio following were elected officers: —President, ilr. G. Tulloeh; vice-presidents, Messrs. Ling, M'Kegg, Whata, Hema to Ao, Uma Taipua, Eairley (2), Higgitt, and Hatch; secretary, Mr, T. Elers; treasurer, Mr. Tulloeh j management committee, Messrs. Reweti, Whittaker, S. Cook; captain/Mr. A. Whittaker; vice-captain, lleweti. The colours of tlio club will be black and white. At the annual general meeting of the Otaki branch of the New Zealand Snorts Protection League the following officers wore elected:—Patron, Mr. Ben Ling; president, Mr. W. M'Kegg; vice-prosi-dents, Messrs. 0. J, D'Ath, J. 1). Howell, Geo. Dempster, C. L. Bartmann, and P. Taipua; committee, Messrs. F. H. Bright, 11. Nicolson, M. Ayre. Ered: Bills, and G. Tho harvest thanksgiving sale, held at Manakau on Monday niglit, was verv successful, somo £G being 'realised from the sale of produce. A dance of an enjoyable naturo terminated proceedings, Mrs. E. lie van supplying first-class music. The Manakau crealucry runs every other day, tlio supply of mill; being forwarded to Olaki. v A little girl, Adie Motlev, formerly residing in this district with her pui:ents, died at Wellington on Monday. The funeral took place at Mana.kau yesterday afternoon. At. the annual meeting of Die Oiaki branch of the New Zealand Sports Protection I,e;igne a motion was included in the report expressing regret at tlis> death of Mr: *W. Webber, one of the members. A vote of condolence w.>s passed to Die relatives of the deceased.
