EXPORT OF HONEY

DEVELOPMENT : IN CANTERBURY. Encouraged'by the assistance of the Department of Agriculture, tlie production of honey has been developed into.'a profitable industry in Canterbury. ' The first shipment was.'exported to.'Eiifjlaiid-iii May last year. Last week tho Athciiic left'Lvttcl'ton with about ?ix tons of honey oil board, and the Remuera will take away a record ship- ' ivient," comprisilig' abhut fourteen tons. In all, nearly sixty tons of hoiiey liave been' exported"fioin New Zealand since May,.1913. ■■ ■ . According. to the information given by' Mr. L. l Boh man,' ripiary instructor and grade'r in Canterbury, there a'ro about .2000 apiarists in the province. The current price of honey on the London market .is about- '£45 per ton. and, as ''GantcHiury'' alone' is. capable of exp'o'rtiiig about -200 .tons annually, the monetary consideration ®s worth the attention of apiarists. Under tho-present '.arrangements .the : wliole of.the consignments are -sent' to London by a' large Chr.istchu'reh firm,..who place the. goods on thp market -to the'best advantago 'of the exporter, a small commission being charged for'tho work. As. far as the-grading is ■concerned, .the. Gov'crn.ment'place.' at the disposal of the '.exporters gratuitously.
