BETTER ELECTORAL ROLLS

AT CHEAPER COST. GOVERNMENT'S UTK3T REFORM. (Br Telesraph.—Press Association.) Dunedin, May 1. In conversation with a reporter today, tho Hon. Mr. Fisher mado a statement regarding the compilation of the rolls for tho General Election. "For the purpose of enabling political organisations to get to work as toon as possible," said tlio Minister, "tho Electoral Department has now completed the issue of the supplementary rolls "hich aro right up to date as at Mcreii 31. The supplementary roll will contain a list of persons who, cither through removal, doeense, transfer, or other causo, have bcsii removed from the rolls sinco tho last General Election. Tho supplementary roil will alsci set out tho names of all those persons who have been enrolled since last- election. A reform will be brought about this year to take the place of the older method of compiling rolls by means of temporary canvassers. By arrangement with tho Postal ami Police Departments,' tho enrolling and checking of enrolment forms will bo carried out by tho letter-carriers and members of the police force, and they will be paid by tho Electoral Department for the services rendered. Every householder whose name appeajs on the roll, or who wishes to be enrolled, will be carefully checked by the Electoral Department, and, in certain eases, should doubts bo entertained as to the validity .or genuineness of any enrolment forms, tlio Postal Department , will he able to afford. a complete check; Tiro services of members of the poliea force will bo used mostly in outlying districts. ' ft is hoped by these means to secure a hotter roll than has been the ease in tl» past at a, very considerably reduced cost. This will not, of course, interfere in any way with the enrolling of tors by any political organisation, but all enrolment forms which are put in will bo carefully checked by "part time" officers, or police or postal officers employed for tlio purpose.
