INCOME TAX RETURNS
MERCHANT FINED FOR DELAY. (By l'-elesranli.—Press Association.) 'Auckland, May 1. Benjamin Williams, a Dargaville merchant, was to-day fined £30 on six charges of failing to furnish land and income tax returns. The Department pressed for a heavy penalty, for tlio defendant had taken practically no notice of tho Department's demands. The case had originally been set down for an earlier date and on a promiso of tho defendant to rectify his omission had boon adjourned. He, hon'over, had failed to fulfil the promise. Mr. Buttle, counsel for defendant, said that tho returns Jihd been so involved that dofendant' had applied to tho Department for the services of an officer to assist him. The officer, however, had not been available, and the matter had bedh allowed to run on. Tho Magistrate pointed out that defendant was liable to a penalty of £100 lor each of his six offences. Williams had been deliberate in his offences, but thero was a certain amount of excuso for him. A lino of £5 would be imposed in regard to each offence. i
