BASEBALL COMING TO BE PLAYED NEXT SUMMER. • CLUBS FOB3UNG. During tho summer of 1914-15, the predominance of cricket is to bo challenged. It is stated that alt over tiio Dominion there are numbers . who are working quietly yet enthusiastically to give- America's national ginne--basebaH —another start, for it was "once tried in Wellington years ago. A club is in existence in Cliristclmrch, Auckland is about to orgimiso a ehib, and it is stated that Wellington has four clubs practically formed, or ready to form. So next summer will see tljo'ganie played in Wellington, and, judging by theenthusiasm, it is likely to get a hold.
Nature of the Game. Those who know the game arc ire!l aware that there is always something happening at . baseball—good pitching, lino batting, or magnificent catering and fielding.- The. excitement when a player is "running to base" and all the fielders are. intent or getting the- ball there first is often intense. There is still another thing which adds to the interest attaching to the game. When, a hit 'is made the players must run—not only the batsman, but the men en the bases as well. This .is net an isolated feature in the play; it is a constantly recurring factor.
Slow Play Impossible. There is no possibility «f a baseball Kaino becoming' stow. If the pitcher makes four successive faults, or "balks" in attack—that is, if thn ball docs not pass over tho "home plate" at the stipulated height between tins batsman's kneo and shoulder, the testify is an advantage to the batting side. •' The bats* man is permitted to pass to the first base, and tho other tkr<« bases without incurring the risk of be«g pat ottt. ■In fact, everybody iias to hn alert all the time to do something. There-is no careful defensive play, for rmis must eomo somehow, or She ifl side- lose- tlioir men. '
Clubs FormeeJ and Forjinirrg. As indicated, an organiscxi■'attempt is boiiij; made locally to introduce ,tlie came on a sound footjng. So for, teams are being j'ermed at NAft"td<Vu, Scalouu. and Kliandallah. The ides is to bo suggested to tho e<eges lior-e, and.it is stated that a number of wellknown cricketers mo interesting themselves .in the organisation.' Mr. S. .Moore, of Wellington, is. responsible for brinKiiifi about .tiio present position, and he states tliat. Australian residents in Wellington are- also etmteinpiiStai-ff the formation of a elsib. Tiio United States Consul in Wellington (Mr. A, E. Wliyto) is to preside aitlie first- baseball meeting, which is to b<3 held early this month. ~ •
