PANAMA EXPOSITION

LOCAL COMMITTEE SET TJPi. ■ During February last tho Prime Minisister called a conference for tho setting up of a general cxecutivo committee to tako in hand all matters appertaining to the Panama Exposition to be held' at San Francisco next year, commencing oil February 20. This confereuco was attended by delegates from the various Industrial Associations, Chambers of Commerce, and tho National Dairy As- , Bociation. , At the conference tho broad lines on which the committee was to act wcro drawn up, and it was decided to appoint local committees in the,various centres, tho duty on which was to persuade and encourage manufacturers to exhibit at tho big 'Frisco Fair, and to disseminata information respecting tho Exposition that may be forwarded to them by the general secretary, Mr. O'Brien (of the Agricultural Department). That committee, as far as Wellington is concerned, , has been set Up, and yesterday held its first mooting. Tho committee consists of Messrs. C. fi. Norwood (chairman), A. W. Newton, and A. E. Donne, representing tho Welling-, ton Industrial Association- Messrs. C. W. Jones, James Macintosh, and Thos. Oray, representing the Wellington Chamber of Commerce; and Mr. J.G. Harkiiess, representing the National Dairy Association, with Mr. H. If. "Allen as secretarj - . It was decided: "That Messrs* Norwood and Allen wait upon Mr. O'Brien to ask him to explain upon what lines exactly the -Government was desirous that the local or centre committees-were to work, will Exposition advertisements and pamphlets be obtainable, by possiblo exhibitors at tho office of the local committee, and also to ascertain clearly whether the Government intends that exhibitors should forward to tho general committee goods that they may bo prepared to forward to the Exposition; m other words, does tho Government intend to undertake- the work of censoring proposed exhibits." The local committee is to meet again on Tuesday next, when their duties will bo defined more clearly.
