"THE INEVITABLE STEP"

TRADES UNION COMBINE. By Teltersipli—Frees Aesociation-Copyriebt London, April 27. • Mr. Thomas, Labour M.P., speaking at a railway men's mepting at Preston, supported a motion in favour of an eight hours' day and a minimum wage of 305., with a pro rata advance to those receiving over that amount. Ho said that the recent'amalgamation of trades unions was not intended as a declaration of war. The challenge was merely the inevitable step in the development of Capital and Labour. The capitalist combination arranged in November last necessitated labour concentration. .

The amalgamation referred to by Mr. Thomas was decided upon at a conference of tho Miners' Federation (renwsenting 720,000 members), the National Transport Workers (300,000 members), and the National Union of Railway Men (270,000 members), which appointed a sub-com-mittee to draft a combined working agreement.
