HIBERNIAN SOCIETY
Members of the St, Abysms branch of the H.A.C.B.S. assembled in force last Thursday evening, the occasion being a complimentary social tendered to Bre. T. l'ender, past president, in view of his approaching marriage. Bro, C. J. M'Erle.au presided. During the evening tho chaplain, Rev. Father Peoples, presented Bro. Ponder, on behalf of tho branch, with a, framed illuminated past'president's certificate and a srt of silver niuJ cut glass pickle jers. In doing so ho referred l-» Bro. Vendor's many good .jiialities and interest displayed ir. the society, lie having hold the office of'president on five occasions during the past, five years. Tho Kcv. Father Peoples made sonie general remarks on marriage, i» which ho emphasised that it- was tho duty of every man to marry, thereby fitting himself for the duties of a citizen and taking his proper ylacc in the State. Bro. Pernler, in replying, thanked Shfi iiu'inbcrs for their tokens of esleein, and said he appreciated the. liotiour ol having a past- president's certificate of the. society. ' Advantage was taken of the presence of the Venerable Archdeacon fievoy, who has recently been appointed provincial for Now Zealand, and who eclcbrated'his 71st birthday a few days ago, to present bins with a token of esteem. The presentation was made by the eeeretar.v, Mho wished the Venerable'-.Archdeacon many more years of activity.
