BATCH OF.CHINESE REMANDED. On behalf of tho Chinese concerned ia .the charge of keeping an alleged common gaming house, at No, 18 Hainina Street, Mr. J. P. W. Dickson applied to Mr. D. G. A. Cooper, S.M., at the Magistrates Court yesterday for a further remand. ■ Polico Inspector Heiidrej; said that he did not object to tho application, but ho would liko tho eases disposed of as early as possible. Tho Magistrate granted an adjournment till Monday next and ordered defendants (17 in all) to pav costs for attending. Bail was altered as before. Tho Chinese concorned are: Ah Yep (charged with keeping a common earning house); Ah Gee (charged with assisting in the management of a common gaming house); and Ah Viui", Tai Lee, \Vong Ah Hoo, Ah Yuan, J<» W \ee Ceo,. Geo, Ah Lum, Jim Mee, Lee. Long, Tm Bow, Ah Wong Ah Sam, and .She Tong (charged with being found in a common gaming house).

BICYCLES THAT STRAY. A plea of guilty was entered bv John Sinclair whon charged with stealing a bicyclo valued at £5, the property 0 of some person unknown. Inspector Hendrey stated that tho owner of the bicycle, which was practically a new ono, had not vet been discovered. Tho accused had admitted stealing it, and had stated that ha found it m a street. Ho had attempted to sell it but without success. It was strange, said tho Inspector, that people habitually left their bicycles about, and when they missed them they were apparently too lazy to make inquiries. Accused was remanded, far a week, when he will appear for sentence.

COAT-STEALING. A respectably-drossed Wonum named Florence Grace Ward pleadwl oot guilty to a charge of having stolen an overcoat valued at 335. 6d., the property of Sydney Diomgool. Mr. P. Jackson' appeared for accused.

In evidence, Sydney Dromgoal stated that lie was a draper carrying on business in Lamb-ton Quay. The coat (produced) was his property, and ho had identified it in a second-hand dealer's shop.

Jack Nightingale, second-hand dealer, stated that ho had purchased the coat for 65., from tho aecused on April 21. Ho was positive that it was the accused who had sold him the coat.

The accused denied stealing the coat indicated in the charge, hut when shown another coat by Inspector Hondrey, she admitted stealing that. Inspector Hendrcy stated that the woman had had an unfortunate life. She Tinrl been three times previously convicted for similar offences. Drink was the cause of tlic whole trouble.

After warning accused, His Wortlvip entered a conviction, and ordered her to conio up for sontence tvhoii called upon.

IN HOTELS AFTER HOURS, Frank Brogan, John Griffin, p.ml Oeorgo Peacock woro each fined 55.. with court costs vs., for being found iu tho Metropolitan Hotel, when 'such, promises were required to be closed.

Timothy O'Connor was sentenced to one wont-h's imprisonment for disobedience of a maintenance order, the arrears totalling £10. The- warrant is to he suspended "provided that he pays the amount on or before Slay 11.
