PETONE COUNCIL
MOTOR-BUSES & SEA WALL
The Petono Borough Council met last evening, the Mayor (Mr. J. \V. M'Ewan) presiding. Councillors E. W. Forsyth, J. \V. List, W. Cox, C. P. Brocklebank, A. Anderson, T. Townsend, R. Jones, and W. Triieman were also present. A letter was received from til© Lower Hutt Borough Council asking if the council was favourable to a conference, of representatives from the Hutt County Council and the Beta* and Lower Hutt Borough Councils' for the purpose of dis. cussing the establishment of it cottage hospital in the Hutt Valley.—lt was resolved that the request for a conference ho agreed to and that the conference be held in Petono on May 18. Mrs. M. A. Tattlo wrote regarding a strip of land fronting Britannia and Udy Streets, objecting to tho price offered by tho council, who require tho land for widening Udy Street, Thecouncil offered £U, and Mrs. Tattle asked £120. Tho council decided to take tho land under the Public Works Act, after further approaching Mrs. Tattle with a view to arriving at a settlement. Tho Mayor moved to tho effect that tho Borough Engineer Ixj instructed to proceed with tho construction of tho sea wall along the water front, as outlined in tho prorjosals approved at a- recent poll, at which the raising of a loan of •£SOOO was sanctioned. In moving tho resolution,-Mr. M'Ewan stated that the work should now be undertaken by tho council as there would bo nodifficulty in arranging tho finance required. Work would be given to a number of men during tho winter months, and the sooner the work was undertaken the better it would bo for all concerned. The completion of portion of the seawall between Nelson Street and the wharf would also bo included in the work. Tho motion was carried, and it was decided to give owners of boat-sheds three months to remove their buildings. Specifications for three mo.tor*huses. for service in the borough, were placed ljofore the council. After discussion it was decided that the buses be of the single-decked type, and each capabfe of seating thirty people. It was decided to invito tenders for tho supply of three buses. Matters pertaining to the gersPta! construction of the buses were left in the hands of tho following omnmitrep: The Mayor and Councillors Trucman, Findlay, Cox, and Townsend. It was unanimously decided to increase the Mayor's honorarium to £125 ■ per annum. Messrs. Ritey and Co.'s tender for iho supply of sewerage plant was accepted.
