FRENCH CLUB.
At. the first meeting of the Wellington French Club en .Friday, Mr, Btuari Jlcntcath, tho president, addressed members on tho work of the eercle, and. made vataablc suggestions, ■ who desired to improve their. ledge of the French language. French. songs were sung by Madame and M.d).te, H. Dccloone a?id Miss S. Eapley, and were much appreciated. A dissertation upon the music of Gounod by the Hon. J. Bigg followed. Mr. Bigg was assisted bv Mr. H. Morgan Dyer (piano) and. Mr. "R. B. Williams (vocalist), Tta lecturer, having given a brief sketch of Gounod's life, referred specially to the character of tho music of the great French composer, and discussed certain of Gounod's operas and songs by way of illustration. Mr. Rigg was ably seconded by Messrs. H. Morgan Dyer and It. B. Williams, Mr, Morgan Dyer played artistically a. part of the introduction and the waltz in "La Nonno iS'angMmte," tho introd'uetio» pastorale in "Philemon et Baucis'," the entr'acte hi "La Colombo," the garden see-no in "Fanst/' the balcony scene in "Romeo and Juliet," the ballet in "Cinq Mars," and the "Marehc Romaine." To illustrate the songs of Gounod Mr. R, B, Williams, sang very sweetly aw! in a cultured manner "Le Premier Jour de Mai" and the famous "Evening Song.'-' After refreshments the soiree closed with the singing of the "Marseillaise." The president thanked Mme. 'DechaaetMackintesh (who had arranged the programme) and the various-performers.
