TRENTHAM RACES
AUTUMN MEETING
FIRST GOLD CUP COKTEST
MERRY ROE'S FINE WIN
POPULAR DEMONSTRATION
THREE WINS FOR EMERSON. Heavy showers of rain fall at Tr-entham on Saturday morning ami afternoon, but us Lite weather was almost brilliantly iine in tho city up till mid-day, the attendance at the Wellington Racing Club'e Ai-i----tumu meeting was not affected. • Those present included the President of t-fc* Racing' Conference (Sir Geo. Clifford) and several Ministers of (he Crown. The rueing track ami the grounds generally were soaked by tho- showers, and conditions were not so pleasant as on the opening flay, but'speculation on the various ewnfrs was brisk, and during the afternoon the totalisator handled the sum of . 4:30,451 Tho investments on the two days amounted to ,E58,'.!36 10s., an increase of .£3W7 on last year's figures.
Race for the Gold Cup. Prom 'every point of view, the Racing Club had good reason to be satisfied with the first contest for the Treirthani Gol-d Cup, ono of'the few. long-disthncs weight-for-age events in tho Dominion: It attracted a quartet of star performers, escited keen public interest, proved, in spite of the heavy rain that was'falling at the time, a great betting race, ami, notwithstanding the downfall of tie favourite, was followed by the. winner bein* accorded an ovation the like of which had not previously been, seen at Tißfitham. The withdrawal of Thrax left Bronze, Sir Solo, Cherubini, and Merry Roe to go to the post. The public anticipated that Cherubini would avenge his defeat in the St. Legcr Stakes, and made Mni a very strong favourite, the St. Legef winner. Merry Roe, being only third -choice. The event was started during a Very heavy shower of rain, and when.the track w»s heavy—conditions which undoubtedly suit, ed Merry Roe, for she led from start to finish and won pulling up by ruiytting from 20 to 30 yards, a distance which she feculd no doubt have increased to' half a furlong. The different stages of the race were timed as follow:—Two furlongs,. 25 •iosec; half mile, 512-ssec.; six furlongs, lmin. 20sec; mile, lmin. 48scc.; mile ana <a quarter, 2min. 36sce.; mile aw! u half, Etnin. <ffi2-s;ec.; two miles, 3i»in. 44 2-ijsec. Cherubini finished the full 'distance in 3uiin. 47 2-ssec.; Sir Solo, 3fain. 52see.j and Bronze, who cantered in, imin. 02-5 sec. As Merry Roe returned to the weighing enclosure, nrolonged cheers ware given for the filly and her jockey.
Presentation Ceremony. The Hon. W. H. Heriics, Minister of Eaihvays, addressed the crowd in front of the grandstand just after tho race, prefacintr his remarks with congratulations to jlr. P. Hall, owner of the winner. Mr. Herries stated that he was glad that in the first Gold Cup race a North Island representative had triumphed, and ho was further pleased that tho winner hod been bred in tho Auckland Province. The whole racing world was praising tlw Wellington Easing Club for instituting- this longdistance weight-for-age evest, and liepersonally hoped that the club's example would be followed by other New- Zealand clubs. Races of this class must entourage the breeiling of horses'of the right' type, nnd as'their nnmbers increased the ojrpoeition to the totalisator would d-isuraisli. .Miss Harcourt (daughter of Mr. J.'B, Harcourt, President of the Kacin? Club) than prceented the Cup to Mr. Hall, for whom three cheers were heartily given. In the course of a few brief rimarks m reply, Mr. Hall expressed the hope that he -would be fortunate enoiiith to be represented in future contests for the race.
Autumn Handicap, Emperador. flip.™*, nivl Tmmer were withdrawn' from the Autumn Handicap. Both Tannhauser and Ladoga earned over eleven hundred tickets on the bmmm, whilo Sir Kno.x had close on £Mf opposite his name whon the machine closed. Tho last-named had the services of «rt Auckland horseman, J. Buchaian, *liq managed to keep the chesliiat horse. u,p with the field the whole way. In consequence, the race was all over as sftbn as the straight was reached, for Sir Knose preat staying powers enaWed him to finish much better than any of lite etbere. Byron just managed to beat "Bx4 Beok for second place, Tannhauser, the -favowite, heing fourth. Ladoga had a S<wd position until atout four fnrlonus from Berne where ho dropped back beate-Ji and finished last.
Other Events, Valhalla, Beldame, Gipsy Betle,. and Sir Moseley, who 'had competed in the Thompson Handicap ou Thursday, -irere starters in the sprint eveftt (Suburban. Handicap) on' Saturday and three of theta were preferred to Enuengarde, although the last-named had won tho six furlong , race rather easily on the opening day. Backers showed bad' judgment here, for Ermeugardo finishe<l in {rent of all tho hones named, though she herself was baaion by Aratiatia, who, with an advantage of 341b. in tho weights, was able to commence much faster, and thus sec-are a better position than tho lop?tteight, The winner was well supx>orted. in doubles <ffi Saturday morning on accaant of a smart gallop in tho early morning work. But for this he would hare been a. greater outsider in the machine betting, On account of the first fence {doub'so brush) in tho steeplechase course being scarcely wide enough, \four of tho nine starters in the Second Steeplecha.se iost their chances there again tin Saturday. Ivelp fell and Grit lawless,' Master Malachi, and St. Curio ran off. Silver Monarch, and Eenoivned May fell at lafor stages of the race' and ther* were . wily .three.'horses left to finfe.li. Tiro contest resolved itself into a profession tUo. whole way, Exotic winning ■ very easily at the finish after, giving a faultless •exhibition of jumping. The withdrawal of. Byron and Mowbmr made (he Hiitt Handicap a' three-horM race. As is very often tli* case- in such contests, backers were unable to ■ select the winner, the outsider. ITsurifc Victoria, (retting home ahead of the favourite, Tetikura,' while Imiiier, wlro made a poor showing, was badly beaten at' tbo finish. In a field of five, BelasMi was niwJe it very warm favourite for tli« MuHtoi Handicap, and nicely handled by C. Emerson, lie won quite comfortnWy at tho finish, while Jterrie Gain and CMlies had a great set-to for eecond money', the former gaining the place ny o narrow margin only. Amity and Icha Willie were quite outclassed. Bee, who had been JwHvilf backed ia the two-year-old race on Hw oprniii* day of the meeting, was 'comparatively iie"lected in the Pacific Handicap on SatHrdav, notwithstanding fhr fact thfti the Martian filly liud the services of Jockey C. Emerson. She was evidently short of a gallop on the first day, when she'failed to run out the five ftirlonss, for on Saturday the race was a furlong further and she stayed on well enonjh to finish in front of Want (Penury—Lady Flora) who came with a great fush'over the last furlong. The favourite, Angolina appeared to lm.ve- n Vail passage, as did another well-barted eanditlile, Downham. but the eamc excuse could not. be given for ths defeat of Tete-a-Toto and Gold Stream, vhe w>ro wpII enough placed in tho straight, had they beon" capable of winning.! Seven "linrses contested tho cntwlwlitig event, Urn Belmont HnmUcap, which was responsible for the defeat 'o? « vert warm favourite, Sveaborg. Tito Finland golding had a, (rood position, but ! : M? big we!»ht and the heavy eoine jwomi *'>o much for him and he finished Inst. Tj-e race was easily won l>v Listen, iinlfsisier to the AVcllinirtnn Ctifl winner, , Moloch. Wee one, of the w'mner-s on the onrning day. ?he had rte ftdviuitage of (ho apprentice's allowance.
