PALMERSTON & MASTERTON BURGLARIES

POLICE MAKE A CAPTURE. (By T»l«crapli.—Special; Correspondent) Palmerston N., April 25. The police on Saturday morning arrested George Watson on a charge.of breaking into the residence of Mr. L. H. Collinson, Ferguson Street. _ It appears that, in the early morning of Saturday, Mrs. Collinson was awakened by hearing her bedroom door creak, and shortly afterwards she saw a flash from an electric torch. She then awoke her husband,-■ and they searched tho house, finding the window of another bedroom and the back door open. A young lady occup3'ing this bedroom had not been, aroused, but later in the morning she missed £3 Is. from her handbag. The detectives arrested Watson in tho Square and found in his possession over 30 Yale-keys, two files, valuable jewellery, and a list of tho names and addresses of the following local residents: —Messrs. Giorgi, Bourko Street; Portoous, Broad Street; Cunninghams, Church Street; and Millar! Ferguson Street. They, also found a paper bearing tho names of managers of business places in Hastings and Napier. Tho police had suspected Watson of being connected with the two burglaries committed at Mastorton last . week. These the arrested man admitted, giving the police a written statement regarding them and the local burglary. Ho states that, on April 15, at 1.30 a.m., he entored the residence of Mr. Allen, of Masterton, by a back door. Ho went to Mr. Allen's room and took keys and 2s. from his trousers pockets. The next place which he entered was Mr. Spain's residence, gaining entrance by a side door. Hβ went to Mr. Spain's bedroom and. also took keys and 10s. in money. He next- visited Mr. Spain's business premises and took £5 ss. from the safo which he opened with Mr. Spain's keys. As to the Palmerstoii affair Watson said that he had entered the house by a window and that he slept in a stable at the" rear of the house'after the incident until 6 o'clock in the morning. ■ Watson will be brought before the Court to-day and will be charged with breaking and entering the two places at Masterton and also vagrancy, and further with entering Mr. Collinson's heuse at Palmerston and stealing £3, tho property of Miss Angus.
