SHACKLETON'S PLANS OUTLINED

THE TRANSCONTINENTAL JOURNEY

By Telcsrraph—Prc3B Aesoolation—Copyricht * (Rec. April 26, 5.5 p.m.) London, April 25. Sir Ernest Shaokloton was tho guest of tho Pilgrims' Club. Ho sketched plans for landing at Weddel Sea in the second week in Decombor. The expedition will take sufficient food for tho wholo of tho transcontinental journey. Each daily ration will be of tho highest nutritivo value, and thirty-five ounces in weight. Sir Ernest remarked that £45,000 spent in the last expedition would within three years be saved by tho magnetic work accomplished. Observations taken near the Magnetic Polo showed tho magnetic variation lines on tho charts used by ships southward of. the Equator to be slightly wrong, and the correction had enabled ships to save two hours on tho voyage. As emphasising tho importance of meteorologj;, ho mentioned that a dense ice season in tho Weddel Sea meant heavy rains in Chile and Argentina. This year's open season in tho Weddel Sea led to lighter rains in tho Argentina. If observations were taken over a series of years, farmers and stockbreeders in the Argentina would be able more or less to regulate water supplies.
