OUTSPOKEN

FOR PRESENT GOVERNMENT. (By Tdeirraph.— Vtett Auoclatton,) Walmate, April 25. lit the annual meeting of the Waiuiate' branch of tho Farmers' Union, Mr.. Garland, the retiring president, absolutely declined nomination for tho position, on the grounds that political tooling 'would soon bo; strong, and,_ as the union was a non-party organisation, he was obliged to keep clear of the position this year. For instnnco, ho said, Mr. J. Talbot was president of tho South Canterbury Executive of the union, and his son was,a candidate in the Liberal interest for Temuka. Tho Liberals wore making love.to tho Federation of Labour, and .therefore if he met Mr. Talbot, sen., thero would be a quarrel straight away. Personally he bclioved that the farmers of, the Waimato district wore almost -unanimously supporters of the Massey Government, but one or two would leave the union if ho took an active part in politics while he was president. Ho thereforo declined nomination. Tho meeting accorded Mr. Garland a hearty vote of thanks for his herculean work for several years as president of the union.
