ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.
ACCIDENT ON S.S. WESTMEATH. John Hayland, a wliarf labourer, residing at Wellington Terrace, _ met with a painful accident white assisting to discharge the steamer at th© Queen's Wharf yesterday afternoon. It appears that Hayland was assisting to take off the hatches whieli were covering ono.of the holds, slid 1 jvs ho walking from one side of the hold to tho other ho stopped on to one of the'hatches and it immediately gavo Way under his weight. The unfortunate mail precipitated to tho bottom of one of the holds, a distanco of lift. Although ho was hurt, ho endeavoured to Climb up the ladder out of the hold without, assistance. Ho had managed to roach within a distanco of a few rungs, from the top when he collapsed. Had it not been for the prompt action on the part of ono of his comrades h.e would undoubtedly have again fallen to the bottom of tho hold. He was taken on shore and first aid was rendered by members of tho Harbour Board Ambulance Corps in C shed. Subsequently Dr. Henry was in attendance and ordered the injured man to the Hospital, where it vasi found that ho was suffering from a broken forearm, scalp wounds, and an injury to his hip.
