HUTT PIPE BRIDGE

FORMATION OF THE-EASTERN ' ■ ■■.. APPROACH. ■ •- i j . Arrangements wore completed yesterday to carry out tho work of forming the eastern approach to tho now pipe bridge' over the Hutt River. Representatives of tlio local bodies concerned met in tho Mayor's room at tho Town Hall. Besides tho Mayor (Mr. J. P. Luke), there wero present Messrs. H. E. Kempthorne (Hutt). J. W. M'Ewan (Petono), and M. W. Welch (Hutt County). The Mayor after consultation with members was ablo to announce that an agreement had been reached in regard to tho amount of contributions, viz., Wellington, £475: Petone, £150; Hutt, £160; Hutt County, £100; and Eastbourne, £75. Mr. Organ said that tho Eastbourne Council wanted the road to be formed to a reasonable width, say 30ft. or 40ft.

Mr, Kempthorne made similar representations, and suggested that tho work bo dono by contract and carriod out under tfio supervision of the Hutt Borough engineer. Ho was not instructed to insist on this latter condition, however. The Mayor declared that he could not havo agreed to such a condition while tho. city was contributing a much larger sum than the Hutt Borough. But he was suro there would bo no trouble about the details. It was resolved that as the matter of finance had boon agreed upon, tho city engineer call , for tenders for carrying out tho work.
