HUTT DISASTER FUND

RESULT OF STREET COLLECTION. On Saturday the ladies' committee formed by the Mayoress (Mrs. Luke) to collect for the Upper Hutt disaster fund made a street collection, with a result altogether satisfactory in view,of the many calls which have been made on the public purse of late. Thirty ladies assisted in the campaign, and'took up their allotted stands at 7.30 a.m., and maintained the appeal until 5 p.m., when thirteeii lady adherents of the Salvation Army took up the good work, and kept the boxes rattling until 9 p.m. Homo of the ladies invaded the cricket and football grounds, and, the bowling greens, and more than oneventured' among the crowd at the New Zealand. Natives' Association's gala at the Basin Reserve during the afternoon. Tho' sum thus collected amounted to £105 Bs. Bd. To this has ,to be added a cheque for £5 from Mrs. H. D. Bell, one for £2 2s. from Mrs. Sefton Moorhouse, and a personal donation from tho stewards of the Wellington Racing Club of £11 11s., which brought the total for the day up to £121 11s. Bd. The ladies who topped the list were Miss, Simon (£9 16s. 2d.), Mrs. Clark (£9 13s. 6d.), Miss Marie Fix (£8 2s. Id.), and Miss Luko (£7 os. 4d.). Special mention should be made of tho effort of Mrs. and Miss Doyle, who made a house-to-house canvass in Maranui and Lyall Bay, with the result that £6 12s. 7d. was collected.

The amount collected was made up as follows:—100 halfpennies, 1416 pennies, 743 threepences, 822 sixpences, 551 shillings; 119 two shillings, lit) halfcrowns, two half-sovereigns, and one sovereign. During the day refreshments were provided for the collectors by Mesdaiuee H. D. Bell, S. Moorhouse, and J. P. Luke, who were ably assisted by Mesdames F. Mills and Preston. Miss Luke (tho secretary) desires to express thanks to all who so cordially assisted in making the collection, and to the public for so liberally responding. '•THE DOMINION" LIST.
