HAWKE'S BAY LAND.
CUTTING UP ESTATES. At his meeting at tno lown Hall last nijj;nt one .attoruey-Ueneral (tlio Jlou. A. L. Herdinanj referred" to the fact that the , graduated laud tax imposed b.y ihe Government was having tiie eltect of cutting up- the large estates in Hawko's Bay. Ho would give figures, he said,' which would lead one to the irresistible conclusion that the- operation of tho tax was inducing land holders to cut up properties. Quoting figures, Mr. Herdman said that the area of land iu Hawke's Bay, of an unimproved value of £20,000 and upwards, held at March, 1911, was 611,384 acres. Tho area held at March, 1913, was 462,468 acres, showing that tho area.had decreased in a period of two years by 148,016 acres. (Applause.)
The figures, he said, were instructive, and if settlement of lands in tho Hawke's Bay province was to go on at that rate during tho nest seven years, those figures would work out to show that no estates would bo left of an unimproved value of £20,000 and upwards. • ' •
