As some of the. sufferers were officers in the Public Service the committee had waited upon Cabinet Ministers to as* certain what tho Government proposed to do, and as the result of that action the following• resolution was passed:-— "That,_ in eonseqiiejicu of the fact that tho Ministers had agreed to submit to Cabinet a scheme that would provide assistance to the dependents of those in .the service of the Government who suffered in the Upper Hutt disaster, tho amount renuired to be solicited from the public bo £2000."

It. was further received: "That tho committee decides that tho whole of the contributions received toward the fund, from whatever sources, arc to he devoted solely to tho assistance of dependents and sufferers by the disaster, and for no other purpose whatever." The Mavor explained that the reason of the latter restriction was that the public might have received the impression that the whole of the £5000 originally mentioned as the sum likely to ho needed might not be required for tho actual relief of sufferers' and dependents, and they, wished to make it clear that tho money subscribed would be devoted to the one. purpose cmlv. ■ ■ The- amount already subscribed'from all sources is'£s96.
