Coogeo Handicap at'Randwick suggests that the Be'hiform" gelding'' Was short of ii race when he ran in tlio Doncastei; Handicap. Ho had not started since the Wanganui Cup, meeting in February and
probably the race on Saturday worked a big improvement in him.
There is no denying tho fact that racing is going ahead in New Zealand and in no town more so than in Auckland. For tho recent meeting at Ellorslio tho Auckland Racing Club handled considerably more money than any otlior club. The suburban clubs in the northern city are going ahead by leaps and bounds. For its autumn meeting the Avohdalo club has received record nominations and in the Maiden Plato there arc 54 entries.
The Martian gelding Zeus was one of tho unlucky horses in both his starts at Ellorslie. He is nicely treated in Handicap at Trenthnm wftii 7st. 111b., or lib. less than when he defeated Ventura at Napier.
The Karamu horses Hyettus and Haskayne have already arrived at headquarters. The 2-ycar-old showed pace in his race at Riccarton, but could not see out ihe finishes. Haskayne's acceptance for the Easter Handicap at Ellerslio was overlooked, but ho ran unplaced in the big handicap on the second day.
Ringform, Downham, Sea Pink, Kooya, and Cornelian were brought back from Lyttelton yesterday. Tho two first-named were sent out to Trentham and the others were railed home. Tho Manawatu Racing Club has purchased the latest model of the Gray startiug-macliine, and it will bo used for the first time at the Autumn Meeting, to bo held this month.
What is known as the Parawai case is exciting considerable interest all over the Dominion, and tho question is being frcoly_ asked when the Racing Conference judges will hear the case. Most likely this and Tho Rover caso will be heard during tho currency of tho Wellington Meeting next week.
The lease of Bronze expires at the end of the present racing season, and it was tho original intention of "Mr, Highden" to return her to the owner, Mr. G. M. Currie, of Wanganui, but now, it is' said, a further lease will be applied for.
R. J. Mason, with five- horses, arrives here on Saturday morning. His team will' consist of. Cherubini, Valhalla, -Emjierador, Historiette, and Rencontre'.
The committee of the Australian Jockey Club came to an important decision early this month. This was that in f utiiro' all "gunners" are to be debarred from racing at Randwick.. ,It is tholight that one-eyed horses are to blnme for many accidents on racecourses whence the new rule.
;•In : a' privata letter received' here, Jockey H. Gray, writing under date March 31, says that Wallalo was to bo a runner in the eventful race, but he did not like him as the distance was too short, and ho further remarked that ho was no sprinter, but a rare stayer. r He gave him a good chance in the Autumn Stakes, one mile and a half, but even that, ho thought, might be a trifle short, for him. He concludes as follows: —"But let them look out for Mm in the Sydney Cup, for over that last halfmilo'lie is a marvel."
