FRISTROM'S PICTURES
EXHIBITION' AT M'GREGOR WEIGHT'S. At M'Gregor Wright's studio' nn La nib ton Quay at present is a capital little ei-hibition of tho work of that clever Auckland artist, Mr, Edward Frjatrom. Mr. Fristroro's strength lies in his instinct for natural colour in which rill-important- department ho seldom exhibits any hesitancy or makes a mistake. His talent for colour seems to go lmnd-iii-hand with his faculty for selecting delectable tit-bits of nature for the exercise of lis brush. In drawing ho is not always correetr—it comes out when ho goes down to the sea for ships as his subject. Still, there aw not many paintings iu tho collection where faulty drawing can he detected. . The collection consists of small canvases, mostly oils, of views secured in and around Sydney, Wellington, AurkjandKoterua, Rarotnnga, and Tahiti, and as the prices range horn £1 Is. to £8 Bs., a selection may'be secured at a leasonable rate, Oiw'of tho most commondablo hits of painting is "Tho Ediro of the Swamp, Takapunsi," » very true and restrained piece of brnshwark The lush green of trio swanip-odgo grass, in contrast to tho darker green of gorso clumps, is most natural, and (he. picture is given a feature ifi a, tell tree (silhouetted against the evening sky) in the foreground. "Going Homo from the S-:ik-,yards, Jlangaweka," depicts a mob of tired sheep trailing alonjj a dusty road, with a piece of MangawcW's chalky cliff-faces as a background, In "In tin? Orchard" Mr, Frist'rom gives a young lady posing awkwardly "beneath a bongh" in the mosaic light "that iilters through tho leaves or a tree. Tho figure is -evidently not the artist's forte —tho trees and the light effects are cleverly done. There is a sweet- little painting of Eastbourne Church . that soma harhoursider is bound to purchase. Beyond s- clump of straggling trees gleams tho red roof and spire- of tho church, and iu the distance there i-s a glimpse of tho blue waters of tho harbour. "The Old Mission House at Rn-ro-tetiga," and some bits of Tahiti—a street in Papeete and a stretch of coral strand are painted with . strength and virility. Tho exhibition is well worth a. visit. %;j ■-~-,. v, .;,;„.: \4; ■■~; ,-— ■
