RUGBY THE CITY CONTROL MEETS. SATURDAY'S FIXTURES. The Management Committee of tho Wellington Rugby Union met last night. Mr. 15. O. Hales presided, and tnere Wore present also Messrs. W. Perry. E. Little, H. Buck, A. E. Wilson, G. Howe, E. A. Dawson, W. Hardham, and D. Weir. Tho senior games for Saturday, April 25, were drawn as follow:—Petono v. Poncko, at Athletic Park, No. 1; Wellington v. Melrose, Athletic Park, No. 2; Oriental v. St. James, Lower Hutt; and Athletic v. University, Petono. It was reported that Mr. B. M. Mams had been'elected players' representative on the Referees' Appointment Board, and the committee was formally advised that Mr. L. Sievors 'had been elected to represent tho Wellington Roferees' Association on the board.
Mr. J. H. Lynsky, of Petono, wrote accepting the position of delegato to the New Zealand Union.
The Lower Hutt Borough Council advised that the union's tender for the Recreation Ground during the Rugby season had been accepted. The secretary reported that tho majority of entries of teams for tho competitions had been received, but that the committee was not in a position to draw tho junior and lower grade fixtures. It was resolved that all entries must bo in hand before Saturday, and the clubs are to "be notified to that effect.
St. Patrick's College was granted l the use of Athletic Park for Tuesday.afternoons.
Tho accounts for the Petone-Ponsonhy I niatch, played at Pctone last Saturday, showed that the total takings wore £19 4s. 6d., the profits £16 19s. 6d., and ! that the ■ latter amount was divided equally between the Ponsonby and Pe-J tone Clubs.
The Taranaki Union informed the committee that they were willing to send a team to Wellington on June 3, hut might have to fulfil an engagement with Wanganui. However, they would' he pleased to visit Wellington at a date suitable to the city team.

A letter was received from the Wellington Hockey Association, stating that that body intended to enter a strong grotest against tho increased charges for city reserves, and asking whether the I'ootball Association was willing to co-operate. Mr. Thompson said that he did not think that the association 6hould tako tho matter up. The Chairman: Both tho Hockoy and tho Lacrosse Associations are taking the matter up. . Mr. Varney: The Rugby Union will not take any part in it. Th© Chairman: The idea is that wo. should appoint a sub-committee to meet tho other committees and then, form a deputation and wait upon the city authorities. Wo are affected, and it is questionable whether wo should sit down and take it. It is all right to say that the city reserves should bo made to pay, -but a united protest w'oiildnot do any harm. ■■•-,•.>
Tho Secrotary: If we go sending a deputation with other sports bodies to the City Council we will probably be told 'that we do not want the grounds. The League people will then step in and take them.
Tho Chairman did not think that the League would tako up that attitudo. The Secretary: Well, last year they offered the councila lump sum for all tho grounds.
Mr. Thompson: I do not think it would bo judicious to protest." It will only.injure our game in the eyes of tie City Council.
Mr. Williams moved, and Mr. Thompson seconded, that no action bo taken.
Mr. Yeomans moved an amendment: "That a sub-committee bo appointed to go into tho matter," and this was carried on tho casting vote of tho chairman. Tho chairman and the secretary wero appointed as the committee^ The presence of .two vice-presidents (Messrs. J. Lewis and H. M'Keowen)'. resulted in a discussion taking; place on the question as to whether they had a right to attend meetings of tlie Management Committee. The chairman ruled that a vice-president of tho association who held a position on another controlling body could not attend Management Committee meetings. Both the vice-presidents present stated that they wefe under the impression that vice-presidents could attend; but could not vote.
After further discussion, both officials bowed to' tho chairman's ruling and loft the meeting.
It was decided to select two senior teams to play a benefit match on tho Basin Reserve early in May in aid of the Upper Hutt disaster fund. Several applications for practice grounds for Saturday nest wero granted, hut it was pointed out that it was, uncertain whether the city reserves' would be available. Meanwhile suburban grounds' were allotted.
Tho secretary announced that so far tho number of teams entered for the various grades was as follow-.—First division, 9; second, 9; third, 4; fourth, 10; fifth, 11; sixth, 8; total teams, 51. It was decided to extend tho time for receiving teams until Tuesday next. Tho team which visited Auckland at Easter and played a representative match against that province will play another Wellington representative, team on tho association's around at Kilbirnie on Saturday next. The team which has been selected by Mr. J. B. I'atou is as follows:—A. Webster, goal; E. Cross and A. Wallis, backs; E. Shaw, right, P. S. Roots, centre, and W. Brownlec, left halves; H. Roberts, —. Owing to tho intervention onco more ■of tho rain, no further games were, played, and tho Contro Committee, in view of tho weather conditions, and to suit players, decided to postpono further play until Saturday afternoon. Play in tho semi-final round will commence promptly at 12.30 p.m., aud tho final at 3 p.m. The draw for tho semi-final is as follows:— Hueston (Victoria) plays Fossettc (Victoria). Horner (Wellington) plays Porteous (Wellington). Owing to the coincidence of club'mates being drawn to play against one another,, the issue now lies between tho Wellington and Victoria Clubs. Ho won a wager by withstanding Carpentier longer than Bombardier Wells did. Mitchell showed great pluck. Ho was knocked down four times bv hard jaw punches before his seconds throw in the towel. The fight lasted ninety-five seconds. NEW TRIAL FOR "JACK" JOHNSON. New York, AdHI 14. The Chicago Court of Appeal has allowed "Jack" Johnson a new trial on tho charge for which he was fined and sentenced under the White Slave.Act. Johnson will now-be able to return to the United States if he cares to do so. SOANLAN, THE BOXER. London, April 14.
