PALMERSTON ITEMS.
Tko Friendly _ Societies' Council held its aimuai meeting on Tuesday evening. The report and balance-sheet indicated a. sound position. Tho Retiring president (Bro, Woodroofe) was presented with a past president's jowel, and tho retiring secretary received a- framed photo,grapli of the council, special reference being mado to hJ3 services during the past two years. The following otlioers were' appointed:—President, Bro. J. Glcosonj vice-president, Bro. J. Hawthorno; secretary, Bro. h. G. Homo; treasurer, Bro. J. Bolfo; auditor. Bro. W. S. Woodroofo; trustee, Bro. W. Galliehan.
Tho parado of the Senior Cadets of tho Palmcrston district <>n the occasion of Sir lan Hamilton's visit on May 18 will take the form of manoeuvres on Fitzkerbart Hills. A general tactical idea governing the manoeuvres lias been framed. A ceremonial inspection parade will take place afterwards, and at this parado tho shooting cups will be presented. Eight miles of marching are involved in tho day's work, in addition, to movements necessary during the mimic engagement. The various com'panics of tho brigade will bo assembled m three battalions for the purpose of the manoeuvres as follows:—First Bat' taliou: Nos. 16, 23, 48, and 28 Companies (Palmerrion North), No, 4D (Foxton), and No.'iSl (Otaki); total, 377. These cadets will bo under Captain E. E. Wiikmghby. Second Battalion: No. 54 (Wererba), No. S3 (Manakau), No. 50 (Levin), No. 52 (Shannon), No. 57 (Apiti), No. 58 (Rongotea), No. oO (lCiotbolton), No. 55 (Fcilding), No. 56 (Ash-hurst); total, 411 cadets, under Major G. M. Burliason. Third Battalion: No. 44. (Mangaweka), No, 4.5 (Huntervillc). No. 43 (Taihapc), No, 102 (Raotihi), No. 103 (Ohakuno), No. 104. (Tauraarunui); total, 537 cadets, under Lieut. E. H. Fisher. Companies from gout-Wards' travel by train, reaching Palmerston at 10.45 a.'m., and leave again at 7.5 p.m. Main Trunk train arrangements are not yet notified.
Yesterday tho Conciliation Council brought to a successful close ail agreement on all points in the dispute of tho Palmerston carpenters' ntid joiners' trade. The employers were represented by Messrs. A. fi. Bennett and T. Collins (Foildingj, and Mr. 11, Bo!lit,t (Taljuorston'i, and tho workers by Messrß. 11. lSlatlicrwick - (Wetlinirton), F. Goulo (Masterton), and J. llodaeivs (Paimers+on). The now award is almost identical with that of Wellington. The increase in pay for country and suburban work is from Is, Gel. to 2s. per hour. The duration of the awnrd will probably bo from Juno 14 next to December 10, 1916.
