Tho bookings from Napier to places down tlip line (including Hastings) were as follow:—Thursday, 600; Friday, 850; Saturday, 700; Monday, 1550;' total, 3700. Considerably more than that number arrived at Napier and Hastings from southern towns. Yesterday 470 passengers left Napier for the Waipakurau races, and 800 from Hastings. Captain Bax, of Napier, who recently broke the world's club record by swinging for over 145 hours, has been challenged by tho amateur champion of the world, Mr. C. Bnckett, of Cbristclmrch. The Napier Golf Club opened its season on Monday with a handicap medal match, N. Kettle winning with S3 *ross, handicap 12, 81 net. OTAKI A match between Wellington ■ and Otaki Hookey Clubs was played hero on Monday in fine weather. Tho local men, after a keen game, won by two goals to nil. Mr. Bobert Lee, chairman of the Wellington Education Board, paid an official visit to the Cartcrtou District High School during tho past week. In im address to the scholars ho remarked that the school was one of the best under the control of the board, and congratulated, the scholars upon having such a line school.
