LONDON CHEESE AND BUTTER MARKETS.

SOME INTERESTING'FIGURES. Some interesting- figures in. Tegard to the Homo cheese and butter markets are supplied in a letter published in the "Southland Times." The letter was received by Mr. J. R. Scott, secretary cftho South Island Dairy Association, from a Loudon gentleman, vho "is in very closo touch with tho produce market there. "Tho market conditions, both for butter and cheese, ate in anything but a buoyant position," states tho letter. "Regarding butter, there is some little excuse for the situation, but for cheese, nono. Tho imports for New Zealand and Australian butter for the three months ending January - were 742,600 boxes, for the same period last year 7U0.600 boxes, which show an increase of '12,000 boxes; the imports of.Danish for the same three months this .have -been 860,000 boxes, as against 794,000 boxes last season, the increase being-,66,000 boxes; therefore, for the last three months we have an increase of Danish and colonial combined amounting to 108,000 boxes." The writer continues:—'.'l am sending you particulars of the Canadian, cheese stocks, which represent the quantity in stock at tho Hocks on February 7. £on will observe the very small total this year as compared with the same dato for several years back. This small stock, coupled with tho fact that the shipments from Canada are falling off Tapidly, is.no doubt the reason why the price of Canadian is so far in advance of ours. For tho live weeks ending January 31 .the arrival of Canadian has'been. 27,000 cwfc., against 39,000 for the same period last year. The New Zealand arrivals of February will be this year 144,000 crates, against 88,000 crates_ for last year. The approximate arrivals for March will be 115,000 crates, , against 74,000 for last year. These two months show an increase of 97,000 crates of New Zealand in excess of last year, which, have to be dealt with during February and March."
