Fisher has presented the Jlasierton School nuiseuni with a number of relics of the Boer war, including a Mauser rifle which was used by tho well-known Prinsloo- family. Tho Masterton Fire Brigade has decided to briug under the notice of Mr. d. ft. Sykes, M.P., tho ease of a 'fireman who was summonsed for not attending drill when he was engaged at fire brigade .practice- and had sent an apology. The following team will represent the Masterton Fire-Brigade at. the Bastings demonstration on Saturday and Monday :—Braisehmen H- Briggius and Stewart, Firemen Ban- and Colo., 'fho team left for Hastings on Thursday. LOCAL ' — On Thursday an accident happened to Mr. Robert Lee, chairman of the Wellington Education Board. He was driving a horse- and gig on a visit- to the Gladstone Sehaol. When opposite Mr. W. Bey's property tho horse got its tail over the roins and commenced kickjug. The gig was smashed ami Mr. Leo had liis leg injured. ' PAHfATUA. .Tke.Pahiatua Borough Council, at its monthly meeting this week, decided - to raise the salary of the town clerk. Mr. G. C. Miller, by £30 a year. ' A conference between the ' Fahiatua Borough Council and Mr. H. J. Aikiason, managing director of tho Pahiatua G«s Works <Jonipany, was held the other evening, when the latter submitted tho terms on which the company was prepared to dispose of its works in Fahiatua to tho Borough Council. After considerable argument, it was decided by tho cpttiicil not to entertain the proposal, but to procure an estimate for an. electric light and power scheme.
The comprehensive programme which has been drawn up by the Pahiatua Competitions Society for its annual festival in Amigust is creating interest in this district. The prize-money offered is considerably in excess of' that of previous years. Highland dafteing for juveniles under sixteen years lias been included on the programme, A number of special prizes have been donated by interested supporters. The Pahiatua Rechabite Lodge, which «"as recently reorganised, ia making Rood progress. At the meeting held this week two candidates were proposed for membership. The sitting Mayor, Mr. J. D. C. Crewe, and Mr. 3. 15. Wilson, an exMayor, have announced their intention of contesting the mayoralty this month. The Pahiatua Methodist Sunday School anniversary social was held'tins (reek. The prizes won by the scholars during the past year were presented by the Rev. R. Richards, who presided. The annua! report submitted revealed a healthy tone in the Sunday School work, and the balance-sheet showed a. credit. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded the superintendent, Mr. W. A. Scdwick, for the able manner in which he had carried out his duties during the year. For the purpose of raising funds to lay down a tennis court at the Mariina School, the people of that district have arranged to hold a series of socials and dances during the winter months. A match between tho Pahiatua and the Kajtawa-Rongomai Defence Rifle Clubs will he held at 'the Pahiatua range on Easter Monday. . The weekly shoot held by the Kaitawa Ladies' Rifle Club, at Kaitawa, this week resulted in the following scores being registered:—Mrs. Bland, 33 (possible 35); Misses F. Kerridge, 33: N. Kerfidge. 33: I. Ross, 32; L.'l. Rnss,'3l;Mrs. D. Ross, 30. The funeral of Katherirm Smith, the nine-year-oW. daughter of Mr. and Mrs. R. Smith, of Kom'ni, took place on Wednesday afteriiooi). The scholars of tho Konini School, of which the deceased was a member, followed the cortege for some distance, and also forwarded an artificial wreath. The Rev. C. E. fobin, of Pongarqa. has received the news of the ctcnth of his father, Mr. William H. J, ToWh, which occurred at Tauranga, on Tuesday last. CARTERTON. Tho late Mr, Sydney Mason was buried in the Clarorillo cemetery on Tuesday afternoon. The cortege was composed of many friends and relations of tho do-c-eascfl, who ;was hold iii high esteem throughout tl\© district. ' The service at the. graveside was conducted by the Rev. Mr. Thompson, of the Presbyterian Church. Messrs.- Alfred, Xeilander, Frank, and Alexander Johnsons, very close, friends of deceased, were the pallbcarers. Mr. H. Nitz, of To Whara.ii, is competing at the- Auckland Gun Club's Faster meeting. A movement is on foot to arrange a chess match North versus Soutb Wai<rarapa, tfl bo played at Masterton. In all probability the Dalcfiehl Football Club will enter a team for the senior championship this year. A very pleasant dance, \inder the auspices of the Carterton Brass Band, was held at Cforeville oil Tuesday evening, and passed off very successfully. Two teams of Carterton bowlers aro taking part in an Easter tournament at PalmerstoM North. The Carterton Volunteer _ Firo Brigade aro sending a team of six brigndesmeti to compote at the District Firo Brigades' Association's demonstration at Hastings on Saturday and Monday. Mr. and Mrs. A. C, Feast, of Carterton, aro at present on a fortnight's holiday visit to Auckland. Sir, W. J,_ Feast, of Ahiakoukn, will bo a competitor at the _ Hnwkc's Bay Rifle Association's meeting. Ho was successful Inst year in winning the M'Farla.ne Cup.
