Tho Auckland Racing Club's Autumn Meeting commenced at Elleralie in beautiful weather to-day. Tho track was IB good order, and. there was a, large attendance. Speculation was brisk, anft theaum <£-£-Ufi67 10s. passed through J

tbo machine, an increase on tho corresponding day last year of £12,3!5. Amottgat the visitors wero His Excellency the Governor and tho Hon. W. H. Hovries. La' Reina and Mystic "ivero the only defections from the Tradesmen's Handicap. Bonny Helen and- Sotiltikoff stripped in; tho best condition, but the former fretted badly before jho start. The daughter of Helen Portland got away last from the barrier, and, although sho threaded her way through the field, was unablo to sustain a'finisliing run, being cut out of second money, by half a. length. Rill, who is reported to bo a cripple-, together with Obari and Hauera, wore the withdrawals from tho Brighton Hurdles. Black Northern ivoro a rough .appearance., and Bercola. was fretting a. lot. First Wairiki and Merrimax were tho only two horses seriously in tho contest, and, after clearing tho last hurdle; Merrimax ran away from her opponent, and won hard held by three lengths. Bercola was well up with the leading horses when ho camo down, but is far frotn at his best. Hyiiiettius, who is erratic at the barrier, was tho best conditioned horse in the Challenge Stakes, but, after getting away better than usual, ran badly. ' It was' a great race between tho three placed horses, but, in the end, tho halfsister to Bobrikoff (who milch rc-

.sembles her distinguished relative) outstayed Mullingar, and, in a. brilliant finish, won by-'a head. Castalia was the unlucky horse in tho race,' for, after setting out' last, she finished with a great burst of speed over the last bit, and was only half a length from tho placed horses. '■ . ■ . Jack Delaval .stripped in perfect condition as the horses paraded for the big eveni: Gipsy Belle, Pavlova, and Beldame sniftered a littlo by comparison., while-.Centura.and Patronale. looked the "roughies"- of- the parade., It was a great batting race,- and a lot of. money was shut off tho machine. Ven- ', tura won from end to end. ; Only at

tho entrance to the straight did the field' got near her, but Wilson then called on her, and sho was fast-going away from her horses... at tho 'finish. Gipsy Belle was running fourth for a portion of the- journey, but was sent back by a bump at the top of the hill. Patronalo got in the ruck at tho start;-and stayed there to the finish, ■ while Beldame found tho distance too far, al-

though prominent for two-thirds of tho journey. Had Jack Delaval got away with the winner tho placing might have been altered as, from being one of the last going up the hill, ho made- his way through the large field, and was galloping over everything but the winner. at the finish. As tho timo will indicate the pace was on tho whol6 way; and the luck of the start settled the chances of a large portion of the field. After the placed horses oame Sir Moscley, Beldame, Royal Irish, Royal Arms, Kakama, 2eus, Cheddar, Tangiwai,' and Patronalo in that order.

. Opposition set out to win from end to .end, in tho 1 President/a Handicap, but entering the' straight the ' field swung wide, thus allowing Lord Lupin up on, the rails. From that stage he wont on to win by a length. _ The Onsloiv ' Stakes was decided by the luck of the start. Bedford got a break on his field at the barrier rise, which ho retained' to the finish. There was so Jittlo between the second and third horses that only the judgo could separate them.

I'isher was the popular selection in the Nelson Handicap, and his supporters never at any stag© of the journey had an anxious moment. The Maniapcto gelding jumped out clear of the 11 the rise of tlie Carrier, and led all the way, winning very easily • Red Book won tho Eden Handicap in very hollow fashion. At tho distance Mr. Watt s gelding ran right away from the field, and must be hard to beat when ho starts again. WAIRARAPA B& MEETING FIRST DAY'S. RACES. RATANA AYINS THE HANDICAP. (From Our Special Heportcr.) Carterton, April 11. The- Easter Meeting of the Wairarapa Bacijig Club was marlted b.y fine weather and attracted a largo crowd. The- courso was iiz splendid order. Tho totalisator receipts were £14,500 for tho day, as against £11,325 for tho first day of tho [corresponding meeting last year. Hoopoe was favourite in ' tho Trial Hack, but she failed at tho turn for home. Ilanfurly was in tho forward division tho whole way, but ho was unable to stall off a good run by ,tho Blenheim marc Ruination, on whom Deelcy had the ride. Morno Gain, who should be all tho better for tho race, was only a neck away third, and then came Juliotto and Silvcrstream together. Rerchau and Asoho fell, but their riders—Emer-

son and with a shaking. The stowards ir quired into tho causo of tlio fall, but found it to bo purely aceidontal. Tho locally-owned Arlington carried a lot of money in tho Hack Welter, but ho floundered a good dear in the greasy going, and never looked liko a winner. Submersion jumped off inffrontt t and was never headed. Top Note was in second place to tho half-mile, where she fell back. She came again in tho straight, howover, and beat Bonus for second place. Arlington should do a lot better ill his next start if the weather remains fine. Vocation and Big Blast wore withdrawn from tho big handicap;- for which Manitau and Ratana divided favouritism. At the start Blue Lako led by several lengths from Ratana and Peroneal, with Manitau and Stepney next. Tho loaders came back at tho lmlf-mile, and tho field was bundled entering tho straight. Then Ratana shot out, and First Consul followed him. Insidotho distance Manitau and Stepney challenged, but Ratana held his own.and won by a couple of lengths. Heads only separated tho next three, Stepnoy being fourth. Two lengths further back camo Povoneal. . The • winner has been most consistent since tho Rangitikei Meeting, and this makes his fourth win. Several of tho runners worn well backed in the Nursery Handicap, but tho winner, Chakwnna, was neglected, despite her good effort at Tronthani. At tho start she jumped off with Goldstrenm and New York, and tho trio had tho raco to thomselves. Ohakwana always had the _ measure of tho other pair, and won nicely by three lengths, New York was a neck away, and then came Elovato and Berg, wlio was disappointed when maUir,£ a pood run at the turn for homo.
