The praotico of aviation is not likely to bo very actively prosecuted in New Zealand for somo time to como. So much at least was indicated by the Hon. Jas. Allen (Minister of Defence) when the present inactivity of the- military aeroplane Britannia was mentioned to him yesterday. Tho Minister remarked that the. cost incidental to the use of the Government aeroplane in experimental flying was excessive, in view of the results to be attained. It would bo wiso, he considered, to leave experimental aviation for a timo to other countries better, able to afford it. At the same time developments in tho nrt-of flying will not be lost sight of in New Zealand, Ono of the Dominion military officers now undergoing training in England is specialising in aviation, and this officer and others will koep touch as far as possiblo with the progress made in aviation _abroad. We are asked to state that a letter signed A. P. Levin, and published in our last issue, was not written by Mr. Ambrose P. Levin. ;At a meeting of tho Taranaki Pres-1 bytery, hold this month, tho Presbytery, on tho motion of Mr. Shore and '. Mr. Lilley, reaffirmed a former resolution heartily approving the platform of the Biblo-in-State-Schools League, and ■instructing the clerk of the session to . write to the sessions urging support of the movement, and advising an exchange of pulpits to bring the matter before tho congregations. ' Mr. H. M'Girr, the Wellington ropresentativo cricketer, met with a nasty accident on Thursday evening. While he was walking along Seatoun Road a motor bicycle came on him rather suddenly from behind, with the '" ■ result that the vigorous cricketer was ; considerably knocked about. Few of the spectators at' yesterday's match wero aware that M'Girr batted with one hand the size of two, and with - other unpleasant difficulties to overcome. His escape from serious injury appears to have been rather remarkable. The cyclist, also, was hurt, but his injuries are mot reported to bo serious. , A cablegram, was published in Thursday morning's paper stating that tho Shaw, Savill Company was contemplating placing a steamer to carry produce from New Zealand to Southampton. As a, matter of fact, this news is not new, and on inquiry . being made on Thursday the information was. elicited that : both the New Zealand Shipping Company and the Shaw, SaviliCompany have always landed cargo at Southampton, provided sufficient inducement has been offering. The former company's Rakaia is at present faking in 'produce for tho port mentioned, and she will be followed by the ■ Tokomaru, of tho S.S. and A. Line, due to commence loading at Timaru on April 18. .Captain Hooper, of the New Zealand training-ship. Amokura, has advised tho Marino Department that he arrived at Oamaru from the-outlying southern islands of New Zealand at 9 a.m. yester- . day. During tho vessel's tour of inspection no trace of castaways or wreckage was found. Eight men, who had ■ been working on Campbell Island, wero passongers by., the vessel. .- Moderate ; weather was experienced throughout the '.'- .trip, -.it'n.ii-.-. !»■• -.■.,,-,,-,. j ..,-, ~-.,. ~.'.'!!. r K Professor; •'Pi'iiice , y>iCanadian .Commiseioner of Fisheries, who arrived at Auck- -•■■■■ iaiid from Vancouver-on Tuesday-last, ■left Pipiriki-for Wanganui yesterday. Professor- Prince and Mr. Ayson, Inspector of Fisheries, who is accompanying him, will ■ leave Wanganui to-day for . Palißerston North, and' will proceed thence-to Masterton by motor-car this afternoon. At the latter place tho fish hatcheries will be inspected, and Wellington should be reached this evening. . Professor Prince will stay at the Royal Oak during tho time ho is in Wellington. On Tuesday morning at 10 o'clock he will embark on board tho Government steamer Hinemoa, for the .purpose of inspecting the fishing grounds round the New Zealand coast. Tho Hinemoa will proceed south in the first instance and trawling will be carried out between Lyttelton and the Bluff. Stewart Island oyster beds will then be inspected, and subsequently the vessel will proceed to - the West Coast of the South Island. En route to Wellington. Tasman Bay, French. Pass, and Pelorus Sounds will be visited. A day or so after arrival hero the Hinemoa will proceed up the East Coast of tho North Island and return to Wellington via tho West Coast. It is estimated that tho tour will occupy about three or four weeks. Circulars were distributed by tho Wellington ' Hotel Workers' Union on ■ Thursday afternoon asking private hotelkeepers and tho proprietors of oyster saloons, restaurant, tea and luncheon rooms and refreshment rooms to enter into a new agreement, regarding wages, hours, and conditions; thereby superseding tho old award, which expired somo months ago. As in the case of the Wellington Hotel Workers' Award, a sixday week is asked for, and also an average .general, increase in wages from 2s. 6d. to ss. per week. Whero board and lodging is not provided, the union demands that the present allowance of 15s. per week shall be increased to 225. 6d. On , Tuesday, April 14, a conference of Arbitration Union secretaries called by tho Auckland Union Secretaries' Association, is to open in the Trades Hall, Wellington. Secretaries from all over New Zealand will bo present, and tho matters to be. discussed include Mr. Massoy's Industrial Conciliation and Arbitration Amendment Bill, 1913.1 It is probablo that tho position of arbitration unions in relation to the United Federation, of Labour will bo,discussed, and a romit will be considered proposing the establishing of two Arbitration Courts—ono in each island.
