MATTERS OF INTEREST FROM FAR AND NEAR,-
1 ■ /./.FAMOUS'BANCERf^W' : THB CO3HNa~oi r MAU»- ALI/AN;?' It is not often. that New Zealand, has tho distinction of being the. first country on this skfo of tho Lino in Welcome! ono of the great artiste* of the older world. Contrary to tho usual way of things, Miss Maud Allan commences her Australasian tour in the Dominion instead of in Australia. Yesterday 'sho arrived in Wellington direct from her tour of tho Bast, and left tiro same day for DnFicdin, where her New Zealand tour commences. Miss Allan is in ..direct contrast to Mdlfe. Genoe, 'tho' other great dancer who has visited our shores, bat, like her, she lives in her art, and cannot give it too much time, ton airch labour, and ton much devotion. If anything;, she is rather tall, very willowy, unci, in the fading light of a grey, mournful dny appeared to he dark-hair-ed and diifk-eyod. ' ! 'fho dissimilarity extends itself to their dancing as' well, for they are both great artistes of entirely different schools.
\ From Music to Dancing. &'y, ■ In tlio course of an interview with a ■representative, of The Uojiimon Testerday, Miss Allan was asked if she had not intended to make music her career. "Yes, I had really," was the reply, "ind I. studied for smiie .timo at the hoyal CaiisciTfttorium in Berlin. It was tlierc, however, id watching groat'conductors of orchestras, that 1 noticed how ; the movements of their bodies--tltoir fingers, their arms, thoir leads,' every bit of them—..seemed to" interpret the. music to their musicians. Every, shade of meaning was expressed in tins way, and, without such movements, tint orchestras irero like- lifeless machines, Action was the interpreter of sound, and it was in this way that. I became absorbed jn_ dancing." t How was it that yon canto to find your inspiration, in Greek art?
t From, fcho study of Greek vaso paintWS,' friezes awl carved reliefs," replied Miss Allan. ."You know that dancing was one of the great arts of tlio aucierit Greeks, and occupied a leading placo •;u the national life. It was always 'the interpretation of somo story,. of" some •einOtißii, and both mind and body were exercised, nothing of the- latter remainihc ullo, and so noble and sacred a tiling was it that it was not made the subject of public competition. Aeschylus himwlf composed tlio figure daiices which accompanied his tragedies, mid trained the ononis for their proper per-' fnnnapce. The wliolo range, of human thowflit; ai fecliMg, was exwessed in bodily movements, afid.overv performmice was closely Mowed a.n'fl criticised by tlio most artistic and ao-st critical of peoples. You msy imagine how perfect a vehicle-' of ©motion it had to be when, at the croat gatherings, so hjbuv people were there tJutt ft large number could not possibly hoar ftdiat was said, but bad to gsiih tlKslfr' knowledge of the story from, the actions of the dancers," interpretation of .Greek Art. :
"i'cs, I did study a great deal, and dtd a. great deal ot wseareli work"," mid Miss Allan in reply to a question. "1 was fortunate in having-a iriendto ltflp me i.u Marcel IJeiny, who was it great authority on those matters. Ho was'ablo to got old histoi'ies and recoMs, am] would interpret tlieia for me so that I had really accurate descriptions of the dances mid of their jaic'iminjjs." Miss Allan explained that, she sought to-OTayo.-tlip poses depicted ..in those old pairttnigs and records, aria rhythmic motion, jii-which tte wlitie:body 4 jrr-ow the %s of- her fingers- to her' toes was exercised. •• With -these, poses she combined modern' music; So there was no retrogression. - Naturally, her. dalic-' |iie is in direct contrast to the great .ballot dancers of the old'type, Grisi TagJioiii, and Cento, as their dancing! from all that can he gathered, ■ would seem to lie in the executing of difficult steps with tho utmost grace and skill. -Miss Allan's is tie natural, the emotional, and the rhythmic expressiwi of music, add yet is the outcome of severe study and of real .inspiration.
Trertd of Dancing f»-day. Asked as to tlio trend of dancing today, Aliss Allan said that it was becoming more iiitcrpNitative of emotion, of beauty, and of Jitc Uiie Imperial Kussiaii Wallet, of which so inueu lias been heard, • were including in thoir -toailets much of the artistic posing wflicii had Mrst been iniiwlaced by ner, and in cpnsequt'iree were isoked'upou very oohL I.V by the Kussiati school of dancing in St. : l»etersbnrg.- Thoir ballets Had ■ never jmcm duiieed in. Russia, jastbeeauso of their departure from tljo conventional form of ballet dancing, nor had they, before they oamo to England and countries on ilto Continent, danced to tho music of composers whom tboy now choose, Russian composers ' hail written music- for their ballets, but it was merely ballet music. Nijiuslty, about- whom so .ranch, had been writtvn aod said,' would not dancii in Russia as fto dances out of it. Shu preferred Mordkms daiwijig, who was a man like a lion, and the most virile of dancers.
Ttie Salome Bancs. Srlohio will not bo danced in A T ew Zealand, for the simple roason that it inquired a special'orchestra and special scenery as well.. Tho dance, she told her interviewer) "was not founded upon Oscar Wilde's play, and had nothing at all to do with it. She had simply' taken the? three verses of Scripture, in j wuich the mother of Salome .'had told i her she must danre before Herod, and, in. return, must demand the head of John the Baptist. Salerno was very young, very spoilt, but, like all iSnsterhgirls, yielded implicit obedience-'to the wishes of her parent. The part that Miss Allan interprets is when. Salome goes, back to her chamber after the d<?ed was done, and, falling into a reverie, sho recalls, to tho sound of the 'inusio below, the scones ij. which she has taken so dreadful a part. As sh« goes over is step by stop, silo sees in the vision the head of John tho Baptist before her, and a wild desire- seizes her to know why it was that her motlmr had, demanded such a reward. She falls into a frenisy, flings herself on the floor before the visionary beau, and implores it to tell iter. She offess it jewels, everythins she has. Tho head vanishes, and Salome wakes from her dream. In terror she flies to tho place that it had occupied in her mind, and falls upon the', floor j dead, in oxpiat'on of her mother's ' crime. The main idea throughout ia tiio awakening of the selfish,' spoilt little Eastern ' girl, ami tho atonement that is made by her death. "People will colour it with Oscar "Wilde,", _s»i«l Miss Allan,* "mil,as you see, it is altogether apart, from bis Salome.*'. ■.'.') ...'.. 'miss milsom, "J ; yJ'K ' HAIR AND FACE PHYSICIAN, :".
