THE CASHIER AND THE WOMAN

T'< JUDGMENT AGAINST CORA iMNNETT BANK TO RECOVER STOLEN MONEY By Telegraph—Press Association-Copyright London, April 7. In the King's .Bench Division of the High Court of justice, judgment was given in the case, in which tho Commercial Bank of Australia sued Cora Minnett, alias Bella Hawlter, and Herbert Oowell, alias Herbert Hawker, to recover £2600 which Walter Ilobson, the cashier, wrongfully delivered to defendants. ...'-.■■ ifr. Justice Pickford gave judgment for tho full amount against Minnott and for £543 against Cowell. Ho said that Minnott' seemed to bo a lady of considerable' ability 'and . varied pursuits. Ho did not think tho circumstances Tinder which she had received tho money were colourless. A bank cashier was not usually a man of large.means,_ and his Lordship could not help thinking that Alinnett had carried out her transactions in a manner calculated to mako. it more difficult for th.o bank, to trace the money. Walter Ilobson was recently sentenced to eighteen months' imprisonment in connection'with his defalcations. He was-for many years cashier at the London office of the Commercial Bank of Australia. In , December last he was charged at the Police Court, with stealing J37000 in bank notes, the bank's property. Counsel for the proee'cntion then stated that accused's defalcations totalled JUiQO, of which, sum .£270 had been returned, and _more would possibly be recovered. Evidence was given .* that Eobson persuaded Mr. Wallace, the manager of tho bank, to 6ign a oheoue for on the plea that he required it to pay withdrawals by Lionel Eobinson.of Clarke and Co., who was a large customer. Eobson opened several accounts at other banks, and paid largo suras to Cora MiaBett.
