THE COOK ISLANDS.
NATIVE SCHOOLS QUESTION. When the Resident Commissioner of the Cook Islands (Mr. H. W. Northcroft), was in AYellington recently, he mentioned the urgent need that existed of providing somo sort of schools at the Islands for the benefit of the Native children, who are at present unprovided for in this respect. Mot long ago the' Inspector of Native Schools visited_ tho Islands and reported upon tho position to the Government. Yesterday the Hon. Jas. Allen (.Minister of Education) conferred upon the subject with the Hon. Dr. Poinaro (Minister in Charge of the Cook Islands). Mr. Allen informed a reporter afterwards that Dr. Poinaro would go down to tho Islands next month armed with tho Government's opinions on tho matter, and schools of some kind would be provided. The Minister added that the main question to be determined was that relating to the financial upkeep of the schools. Dr. Poiuare would look into this aspect of tho matter w.hen he visited the Islands.
