THE VICE OF IMPURITY
strong remarks By the bishop of Auckland. (By Telegraph.—Prpse Association.) Auckland, April 7, ■ "That most terrible vice—one that leaves us'lower than, the brute's," wore tho epithets applied to sensualism by Dr. Averill, Bishop of Auckland, today, in tho course of one of his midday addresses to men. which are.attracting so much attention'locally. "Are. wo not backward," ho continued, "intoachr' ing- our - children that great mystery, tho origin of life?: Are we not letting them 'go' out into the world to learn it, probably; froin' someone with a dirty mind, because- we liave not the courage to do our duty ? Then thero is tho evil. of. bad ; literature. ;' Are wo doing all that we can to,combat it? What about that-most devilish thing—tho common" saying that it is all right for a young manl.to 'sow his wild , oats' so iqng'"as ho settles down later? Do we allow- onr children to go tv>'o or threo or-'more nights a week to picture shows? ..I°a'gree"tEat such shows, if properly conducted,' • may do. much good, but, otherwise, they'. may do an enormous amount of harm'. '■' Then, are we think.inc, of .eugenics? Are. we content to allow , the venereally-diseased person to, go' about' poisoning the' community? Look at tho mental hospitals and gaols! There you sco the- effectsof all tins. ■Wβ sec too' much of tbe reaping, and too little- of the'-sowing nowadays.; Sensuality" is'robbing man of his religion; it is' killing Christianity; it is killing tho Spiritual sense." The Bishop also made a reference to 'the white slave traffic. Speaking of Herod, lib said: "Some such sensual, dovilisli ibrntes are behind what we nowadays call the whito slave traffic. They nro continually searching after new sensations—sensual devils I can only call them. . Very well, you may say, wo are not going .to have this trade in New Zealand, but do not bo too sure that it will notscome here, my brothers. If you are men, men careful of the purity of your:wives and your daughters, you will keep a watchful eye for 'this trade is very likely to come to Kew Zealand."
