THE NEW SOCIETY 'A mooting of tho Council of tIMS New Zealand Forost and Bird Protection Society was held on Monday in tho rooms of the Acclimatisation Society. Mr. t. H. Treadwell was in the chair, and amongst others present were: Messrs. H. G. Ell, M.1 , ., B. M. Molinoaux, C. I. Dasent, and Dr. L. Cockayne, F.R.S. Mr. Ell reported that ho had visited various beauty spots in Taranakt and Hawke's Bay sinco last meeting, nnd madq various valuablo suggestions regarding tliese. ~, It was resolved that tho Minister of Lands bo urged to set aside an area of five chains on each side of tho _ celebrated Mahinapua Creek near Hokitika, and that ho bo asked to constitute tiro Everott Road Reserve, Taranaki, & scenic rosorvo and sanctuary. Island Sanctuaries, Tho Kapiti Island sanctuary came in for discussion, and it was decided to write to tho Minister of 'Internal Affairs asking that steps should be taken to place • such birds ujjon tils isla.ua 'as were not represented at the present timo. Some years ago the office of <saretftice-r on Resolution Island in the OtagoSounds was done away with, and it was resolved to ask the Government to reestablish this office. . ■ , Countess Grey, who is interested in the flora of New Zealand, was *.lected an honorary member of the society, and Mr. F. Stopford, of Napier, and Mr. Dobsen, of Dannevirke, corresposding .members. Dr. Cockayne brought up tie matter of awarding substantial prize's for com* petition amongst school children throughout tho Dominion fer essays on certain subjects connected with' the aims of the society, the schools to be classified for purposes of competition. Tho idea was unanimously approved and tho president (Mr. C. H. Treadffell), and Dr. L. Cockayne (honorary botanist) were appointed a committee to draw up a scheme to present at the nest meeting of the society.. Deans Bush Gift. 'Regarding the splendid gift of th&Riccarton' Bush, Christchu'rch, by the Deans family to the people of New Zealand, it was resolved to send a letter oi hearty thanks to Mrs. John Dea'tts. Mr. Ell reported that funds wero coming in freely, and that the founding of tho socioty had met with hearty approbation throughout New So-aland. Recent donations were: £10 from Mr. A. E. G, Rhodes, Chriskhureli; Mrs. H; :M. Campbell, Hastings, and Mrs. Townond, Christclnirch, £5 annually.
