COTTAGE HOSPITAL
FOR HUTT
Proposal made by dr. purdy.
The erection of a cottage hospital at Hutt for tho sorvico of both Hutt and Petone residents was proposed by Dr. , Purdy at last evening's meeting of tho Hutt Borough Council. ''I cannot ■understand why we cannot run our own hospital," said Dr. Purdy. "We aro told that no cases are sent in from tho. Hutt to the Hospital, and yet in conjunction with Petone wo lave to pay a levy of over £2000 to the Hospital and Charitable Aid Board." Tho Mayor remarked that tho question had been gono into Before, and, if ho remembered rightly, both Dr. Valiutino and Mr. Kirk, who hod attended a- conference, werb averse to tho establishment of euch a hospital., ■ Dr. Pttrdy replied that, since that conference, Hutt had altered considerably, and in othor places of similar Sizo hospitals had been established., _ '"■ The discussion arose over certain estimate's from the Hospital and Charitable Aid Board which had been placed before the* council by Air. H. Baldwin (Hutt representative O n tho. board). Mr, Baldwin remarked that ho had always advocated. tho establishment of a hospital at Hutt. ' . Dr. Purdy continued that his views as to the need of a hospital were supported by other doctors in the Hutt Valley. "It is .a crying shanie," continued, the speaker, "and we will have to approach Parliament on tho matter. Hero is Hutt and Petone" paying over £2000 for nothing." Mr. Baldwin remarked that, although the levy was so high, tho Hutt district was asked to contribilto less than in 1910. "That does not say that tho Hutt itself might have to contribute . £1200 next year if they go' in for any- more elaborate'schemes,' , - said Dr. Purdy. "There are-many,pOor peoplo in tho Hutt who should liave'.got charitable aid and have not,got it. Mr. Baldwin: "That is a slur on mo. I aslc if anyono has been refused aid by me during tho past three years."' Tho Mayor remarked that.'ho was quite willing to admit that thb : levy of' £1150 on tho Hutt was'a large ono, but. before any stops were taken they shouldmake proper inquiries'. Dr. Valintine was the adviser of tho Government in this respect, and they would have to make out a- very strong case. Dr._ Purdy ■then moved:—"That the question bo jjone into at next meeting of tho connoil." In tho meantime ho would endeavour to obtain some data on the matter.' . The motion, was carried.
