THE SECOND EXPRESS

ITS RETENTION SUPPORTED. At yesterday's meeting of the Wellington Chamber of Commerce, Sir, Thos. 13allinger raised iho question .of the second Main Trunk express. Ho tliought they should urge the Department to keep it on during tho. winter. Ho did , not know if there wtis any suggestion yet to discontinue it. Prom a Wellington standpoint it was a very ■important matter. Pcoplo could now arrive in Wellington in the morning, dovotq the whole day to business, and leave again in tho evening. If any train was to be taken off it should bo tho mid-day ono. Ho had been assured that tho sleeping berths in the evening express were all taken up, night after night, and tho train was evidently more patronised than last year. Ho did notthink it should be taken off during tho winter. It was a great advantage to Wellington merchants that a train should oomo from the north in the morn-, ing and leave again in tho evening. Ho also thought they should advocate night trains between Wellington and Napier. If a business: man now wanted to go to Napier, it took him three days, at tho least. From a business point of view thoy should advocate more night trains. It, was decided to write to the General Manager of Railways. asking that tho second express should be continued through tho winter.
