MR. A. E. ROWDEN, KELBURNE. Private information received from Auckland announces the death, which occurred on Sunday, at tho ago of 78, of an old resident of Wellington, Mr. A. E. Mills and Co; Tho subsequent 46 years were spent as confidential clerk to the lato Mr.. W. 8.. Rhodes, and with the Trustees of. the Rhodes /Estate.' Prior to coming to Now Zealand, Mr. Rowden saw service at the Crimea as a • niidsTiipman on H.M.S. Tiger, a paddlewheel warship. This steamer was wrecked on the coast off Odessa on .'.Mky'l2, 1854. AH the officers $»id orow woro taken prisoners by. tho Russians, and sent to St. Petersburg, but were afterwards exchanged for Russian ■ prisoners and liberated, and finally they reached London, having travelled via Hamburg. It was after this trying experience in his youth that Mr. Rowden eamd to Now Zealand. , Previously he had seen Bervjco, in the White Seai where ;,a bombardment of Russian ports was being carried on. His early training was on board the old-Victory. Mrs. Rowden- w#s the first white girl born at Wellington. Her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Stoddart, arrivod at Petono in the 'Adelaide in 1840. 1 Mr. Rowden leaves a widow and family of ten, four sons and six daughters, Tho daughters are Mrs. Cecil Biss and Mrs. Peter Thomson (Pahiatua), and tho Missos K.
