I For the protection of the vessel, against fire the' "Kich" system of fire detection aiul extinction has been installed, by Kiean© of .which an outbreak of fire in any of the cargo spaccs is at once indicated in tho chart-room, and can bo effectively dealt with by the officer on watch, without tbfi i nqcessity of leaving the ftyins bridge. The j engines and i boilers arc of largo capacity I capable of driving the vessel io knots fully j loaded.
The steamer left London on Februar-y 1 and* arrived at Melbourne at 6 fl.m, on March 11, thus completing wMt U a record passage for <i cargo steamer. She accomplished' the distance from London to Melbourne in 36 day® 20 hours actual steaming time, at an average speed of !3£ knots.

The Willoehra will leave Sydney on Satire day, May 16, for Wellington, thence to Raratonga, Papeete, and .San Francisco. There will be no sailing from Wellington through to Melbourne, vi*a the south and HobarL, on Thursday, May 21. Maitai, s.s., will leave Mrifoonrne on Wednesday, May 20, for Wellington, via Hobart and the south. She will arrive here on Friday, May 29, and will tranship to tho Maunganui for Sydney. The Mnitai wtll return to Melbourne," via south, tho Game day. Maunganui, s.s., leaving Sydney on Saturday, May 23, will como as far as Wel- ! liugton only.
