THE DEBATING SOCIETY. Tho annuahmneting of the Victoria Cq]<jDebating Society was held on Thursday evening in the College Gymnasium, Mr. A. E. Caddick, M.A., presiding. The annual report aiid balance-sheet; were passed. It. was stated that one of the most successful meetings held during t-lie year was the outcome of the public debate on the naval problem sf the Pacific. The Hon. A. L. Herdman ■was thanked for presiding on thai occasion, as were also Sir John Findlay and Professor Laby for their eloquent addresses. It was rcoammfflKled that tho arranging of public debates irpon snitablo subjects.be tlie continuing policy of tho socicty.
The union prize for the best debater in the socicty for 1913 Was awarded to Mr. A. B. Sievwright, with -an . aver* age of 4.16 points, out of a possible of 5 gained at the regular fortnightly debates. The new Speaker's prize was won by Mft O. Borer, while, for the first time in the history of the competition, a lady, JMiss M. L. Nicho-lls, won Lord Plunket's medal far oratory. Messrs. G. G. G. Watsots and A. B. Sievwright have been Selected to represent tlie society at the fori booming tournament debate, to be held at Cbristeliurch during Easter.

(chairman), and P.; B, Broad, LL.B. (vice-chairman); secretary, Mr. A. B. Sievwright; treasurer, Sir. L. A. Rogers; committee, Misses i*umphre> and North, and Messrs. W. Hogg and Burn. •
