OUR SAFETY IN THE PACIFIC.
ANGLOJAPANESE ALLIANCE,
By Telesraph-Pr<E« Aeiooiatlon-OomiEM
Sydney, March 23. The Sydney "Daily Telegraph," comnumting ou Mr. Massoy's speech, states that it is undoubtedly a fact that British interests in the Pacific aro safer guarded by .Anglo-Japanese Alliance, and 110 good purpose can he sewed by refusing to admit it, but it was not correct to say that Australia and New Zealand wore protected by Japanoso ships and men. Mr. Churchill would rot say it. No naval expedition from Europe need bo fearod; attack by the United States was unthinkable; so also wae an invasion by any of the South American Republics. It remains, then, only for Japan, sjneo China may be ruled out for some time to come. Therefore, obviously, the allianco secures safety.
In a, lecoat speech Mr. Mnssey,'Prime Minister of New Zealand, reforring to a statement by Mr. Churchill that the alliance between England and Japan secured the aafety of Australian and Now Zealand, commented: "A statement like that does not appeal to me. It is ambiguous, and J do not quite know what it means. Ido not want to do , Mr. Churchill any injustice, but if he means that the people.of Australia and Ney Zealand (for the latter of whom I anrspeaking) (ire to be satisfied with the protection afforded by Japanese ships and Japanese ' Bailors, then Mr. Winston Churchill is very mueh mistaken. Ido Jiot beljeve for one moment that the AnslotJapanese Alliance has secured the .safety pf either Australia or New Zea* land. I do-not Wink so for one moment and it is just as well for Ifr. Churchill to know that." •
