The Union Steam Ship Co.'s Taviuni which arrived at Lyttelton from Napier with sheep this morning, was to have returned to the northern port to-day but, owing to trouble with the firemen, her departure has been delayed.' It appears that ono man signed off at the port to-day, and efforts to fill tho vacancy wero fruitless, tho firemen demanding two extra hands in tho stokehold, on the ground that the vessel was hard to work. In the meantime, tho Union Company has decided to tie the vessel up and await further developments. .
BUSINESS MEN'S TRIBUTE
Tlmaru, March 21. A representative gathering of public men, farmers, and business men to-day presonted a testimonial, subscribed to m all parts of South Canterbury, to Mr. John Talbot, who, as a handsome-ly-illuminated address and the speakers said, had 'been a member of nearly every kind of local body, an energetic, courageous, unselfish, and'modest worker in the interests of tho community for over 40 years, and had set an example of incalculable value." The presentations comprised an address, silver salver, and tea set. Mr. Talbot has been chairman of d ; rectors 'of the Canterbury Farmers' Co-op. Association for the last nineteen years, and tho staffs of tho head oflico and three branches added valuable' presents. EXHIBITION HONOURS. . Auckland, March 21. In the Exhibition awards L. D. Ward and Co. (liuercargill) were awarded first prize for piano of Now Zealand manufacture; the Colonial Sugar Company, first and special for sugar-cane growing, raw and refined, etc.; Department of Agriculture, F ; ji, first for collection of Island products; Fijian Government, first and special for general exhibit; Visara Estate, Suva, first for «sal hemp. ' DUPING THE CUSTOMS. Christchuroh, March 21. Colin C. Forsyth pleaded guilty at the Police Court on two charges of •evading payment of Customs dues, involving £33. Ho sai dthafc the goods were got through with his firm's consignments. The caso has no connection with the recent frauds, and defendant supplied the information on which the charges were based. He was fined £100 on each charge, reducible on tho first to £25. £778 DAMACES. Cisborns, March 25 In' tho Supreme Court tho caso Thomas Cahill v, the Gisbornc Sheepfnrmers' Frozen Meat Company, a claim for £1250 damages for injuries sustained whilst using a hoist in the company's employ, was heard before Mr. Justice Hoskings and a jury of twelve. The jury gave a verdict for £778 damages. Nonsuit points were reserved. PICNIC & POLITICS. Palmerston, March 22. Ovor a thousand flax mill hands held their second annual picnic at Longburn on Saturday. Prominent Labour leaders woro present, and delivered addresses. A Labour demonstraiton was also given in Palriierston North on Saturday- evening, when a large crowd listened to the addresses.
