MOTOR VEHICLES.

FOR CITY CORPORATION USE-

CAUTION COUNSELLED.

At a meeting of tho Wellington City Council some little timo ago, Councillor H. Buddie asked for a report with respect to the advisability of providing' motor vehicles for'the collection of rubbish, etc. Mr. W. H. Morton,, the City Engineer, reported on this subject last night. The Engineer stated: "Owing to the very heavy cost of such vehicles in order to : employ them economically it is j necessary that they be kept as far as possible constantly in motion. In the collection of refuse this is not possible except under the conditions which will bo hereafter referred to. The cart is invariably left standing whilst the men engaged in the work are entering the premises at great heights above the street and carrying tho refuse to tho carts. It would be absolutely necessary to keep a driver constantly on the cart, his work having nothing to do with the actual collection of tho refuse and thedepositing of it into tho vehicle." However, if depots could be procured' in all of the outlying districts motors could be profitably Aised for collecting the refuse. and taking it to the destructor. Of course, property-owners would object to the dumping depots. ■ The'report proceeded: "Personally, I am of ooinion'that the application of motor-driven vehicles at the present timo should bo confined to street-sweep-ers aud street sprinklers. I have recently obtained -some information concerning a .combined sweeper and sprinkler which haS been purchased by the city of Melbourne, the manufacturer of the vehicle b»inK tho Ben-/, Company, of Germany. Reports concernins the sweeper'on all roads have not been satisfactory, but I have been waiting , an opportunity to take annual leave and visit Wboupie for the purpose of f»ttirc full information concerning this vehicle, and also n new system of road construction which has- recently been put on trial in that city. The-heavy cost of tho vehicles requires, thnt the very greatest amount of consideration bo given them."
