BOWLS.
•— fr"; CENTRE'S PAIRS CHAMPIONSHIP. VICTORIA WINS. Beautiful weather -was accorded tho bowlers interested in the champion pairs tournament on tho Wellington Club's groen yesterday afto-noon. ( Promptly at 1.30 p.m. tho incompleted games betweon Pctono and Newtown and Johnr.onvillo and Victoria were Tesumcd. Tho Nowtown pair, who h?d established a comfortahio lead on Wednesday evening, lost no ground under the improved conditions of yesterday, and succeeded in getting tho bettor of Petonc's representatives by eight points, tho score being—Newtown, 22 j Petone, 14. There, was a real good contest between Johnsonvillo and Victoria, the gnmo resulting in a win for Victoria by two points. In this gamo Victoria had much to thank Hunt for on account of his excellent loading throughout tho game. Though only a two-year man ho played as steady ;w a rocli, and drew with wonderful judgment on either hand. Sloauo (Johnsonvillo) and Hueston (Victoria) are both experienced and resourceful players, who never gave much away to each other. Tho score was:— Victoria, 19; Johnsonvillo, 17. Tho result of theso two games brought the final down to Newtown and Victoria's representatives, and Bplendidlymatehed pairs they proved to no. The game was romarkablo for tho fino allround play right through of all concerned, but m particular praiso is duo to tho two ieacts, Warwick (Nowtown) and Hunt (Victoria), who wero .both having a day out. It is safo to say that seldom, if ever, has greater consistency in a dead drawing gamo boon witnessed on tho Wellington Club's green.. 'They wnro seldom moro than twenty inches away from tho jack, and were displacing ono anothor with deadly accuracy in head after head. Both tho skips, Wylie (Nowtown) and Hueston (Victoria) were in lino form, and showed resource and good judgment throughout. Hueston failed tor_tho firs"t time on tho twentieth head, wiieii ho played tho whole four bowls indifferently at a most critical stago of tho game. It was onlv through luck that Nowtown did not pull level on that head, but they only captured a point, which made the totals—Victoria, 19; Nowtown, 17, Wlion tlio skips went down on tho last head, Warwick lay two, with Hunt close up in front and behind tho shot bowls. With his first bowl, Wylio went a bit wide, and Hueston followed with a little too much on. Wylie, with his nest, was btill a little wide, but Warwick signaled that it was another shot, which meant the came —If they could hold them. Hueston's next bowl was a i toucher, which did him no good, Wylio ■ still lying three, two fairly wide shots. 1 Wylio played a short one, but did not offect a block, and Hueston apjain went through Wylie's shots to the back. With his next shot Wylie drew dangerously cloeo again in front. All now depended on Hueston's last bowl, and everyone held their breath involuntarily,, as for two heads tho Victorian skin appeared to have become affected with nerves. It was a lovely shot, beautifully greened, and just the right amount of paddock, and when it finished it lay second shot, giving Victoria a one-point winTho scores wore: —Victoria (Hunt and Kue-ston). 19; Newtown (Warwick and "Wylie), 18.
