The lecturer had gone to a * great deal of- trouble to get samples of ' poisons, which were . passed: round among members for. inspection. At the i close, on the motion of the secretary, a hearty vote of thanks was given the ' lecturer. Reception to Lady Ward. The reception wliieli was to have been .' given by tlio Women's Social and-Poli. ' tical League as a-welcome to Lady Ward on her return to Now Zealand "from a visit to England, and which wag postponed for some time, was held in the Concert Chamber of the Town Hall last evening. The guest of the evening, who was accompanied by her daughter,'sfrs, Bernard Wood, was welcomed on her arrival by Mrs. ivoay Drown, Mrs, Moore (secretary); and various prominent members of the kagii-e, and was 'escorted to the platform, ■ where, with Sir Joseph Ward, who arrived a little later, she remained during the first/part of the evening's proceedings. Mrs. Keay Brown wore deep cream bn.cadetl satin,' with an overdress of black lace and net,' and Mrs. Moore was in royal blue eharmewso, with an overdress of gold net.and lace. Among those who were present wore: Sir John mid Lady Findlay, Mr. Witford, M.P.. Mrs. Wilford, and Miss Wilford, Mr, Atmore, ■ M.P., Mr., and Mrs. Robert Fletcher, Mr. and Mrs. Oorrigan, Mrs. Cecil Jones, Mrs. ]?. Samuelf Mr, and Mrs. E. Levvey, Miss Moore, and others. Ladies' Auxiliary of the Y.m.g.A.. Owing to unsatisfactory weather conditions, the garden party which was to have- been given in Mrs. Denton's grounds yesterday alternooa. by the, Ladies' Auxiliary of the Y.M.C.A. had to be abandoned, and, instead, st social afternoon took place at t'iio i'.M.C.A. buildings. It was with regret that the Ladies' Auxi'iary came to that decision, as the garden m Woo-loanibo Street, is looking particularly beautiful just now. The social hall in the Y.M.CA. had been decorated with quantities of'flowers for the occasion, sm.d an enjoyable musical programme had been arranged by Madamo Alucllfir. Contributing to i it were: ,Miss Wilson, Miss Mueller, Madame Mueller, Miss Besworthy, and Mr. Grant, the latter being one of the winners in a recent pianoforte- competition under the auspices of the Bar- . larat Competitions Society. Afternoon tea was a pleasant item in the proceedings, tlte ladies in charge being Mrs. Thompson, assisted' by Mrs.. Bennett, -Mrs. Varney, Sirs. Hist-, Sirs. Fossette, Miss Montague, and Miss Varney. The sweet stall was iu the kinds oj Mis. Kelly, Mrs. Grant, and Miss Denton, and tlio flowers wore disposed of early in- the. afternoon by tlio Misses Fossette. Mrs. Dumbell was mast successful with a cake guessing competition, the winners of which vntc Miss Wilson and Miss Fossette, who tied. Mrs, Low, president of the Ladies' Auxiliary, was present, and a large number of the auxiliary members also. A welcome visitor during tlio afternoon was Mrs. M. A. Williams, as also was Mrs. Den- 1 ton, in whoso grounds the party was,to •have taken place. Mi. -Vannsy n&tsd materially to the success m the afternoon.

A Farewell Tea. Miss .I'. Nathan ffiivc an afternoon tea yesterday as a farewell to Mrs. A. Levy and her ctautfhters, who are to leave- lor Kiigla-nd to-morrow. Toa was set in tile dining-room, the table having beffu decorated with scarlet eaetus dahlias and sweet peas. A miniature boat, ion which was inscribed the words "Bon Voyage," was-hung under the gasoKer and fastened by red streamers to the tabic, and tho cake dishes were decorated with flacs of all nations. Ail amusing competition took place which was won by Mr. JCachaiiah, of Gisbornc. The hostess wore a gown of nattier blue voile with haml-nainted border. Mrs. Levy wore a blatk brocaded silk costume and a mauve feather hat with touches of cerise. Among these present were: Mesdaraes Goldstein, De Costa, Cohen (2), Jacobs, Kylancls, Atack, Foldi, Cane, Patterson, Sullivan, Ellis, Jackson, M'Masters; Misses Atari?, Nathan, Patterson, Jkrtctt (2), Gannon (2), Penny.
