ST. PATRICK'S DAY.
UMTIMEJY RAIN. SPORTS AT NEWTOWN & HtITT. NATIONAL CONCERT, RECORD FOR ATTENDANCE. CREAT ENTH4JSIASM. Yesterday—tho feast <lay of Erin's patron sanit, St. Patrick—dawned dull and unpromising, and at about, 9,30 the threat of the skies materialised in drizzling rain, which continued with more or less vigour throughout the- day. Tlie energetic committee of Irishmeii who have, for tho past two weeks, been working strenuously for the success of tiecelebration, wero unfortunate in meeting the worst reverse that can attend such occasions—bad weather. In spite of tha unpromising conditions., however, a valiant effort was made to'carry but the sports' at New-town Park, but about 3 o'clock the committee consulted and reluctantly resolved to postpone the remainder of the sports events—those for the adults and the finals <jf the boys' races, to some future date. Church Service and the Procession. At 9 o'clock in tho morfiing /Mass was celebrated at St. Mary of tli'e jtu-gels . Church, Bou'.eott Street, bj the V-ery Rev. Dean Regnault, S.M., Provincial. At tho service the Rqv. .Father I'. M'Carthy, S.M., £ave aii eloquent pane" gyric oil St. Patrick to a crowded congregation. Shortly after 10 o'eloek a procession headed by the City Band, and 'consisting of over 80 -HiberiMaMs, iu regalia,, marched tow.i/ds N-ewtowii Park- A feature of the profession wa§ an Irish jaunting car, occupied b-y people dressed in national Irish fashion. On account of the rain, the children had previously marched to the Town .Hallj and thence dispatched by tramcjtts to the park. Once at the park the juveniles in no way allowed tho gloomy conditions to damp their ardour. A programme of sport-s, under the supervision of tho ilarist Brothers and members of the eoMtiittee, was commenced, Tvhilo ether young colleens and bouchals found plenty of amusement otherwise. There wore donkeys to .ride, the enthralden. of the "ocean wave" to experience, a shooting gallery, and other diversions About- 3 o'clock, however, the rain began to descend so thickly that a decision to abandon the programme was really the onlychoice. In consequence of this deeisiofi a telegram was dispatched to Sir Joseph Ward asking him to postpone Ms patriotic address which he ha'd been invited to deliver. - The committee which controlled tho day's proceedings was as fflUo-V:— Patron, his Grace Arclibishop Redwood; president, his Grace Arelibjsjjop Q'Sltea; chairman, Eev. FatherJiicksen: sports secretary, Mr. H. M'Kcown; assistant sports secretaries, Mr. F. Wliitakej and Mr.'C. Gamble; concert secretary, Mr, P. D. Hoskins; hon. treasurer, Mr. J, J. L. Burke. In Tha streets. In tho streets the display of emerald, tinted ribbons, ties., and rosettes yesterday was notieeabk. Js'or wa3 it restricted to the Irish sectfon or the population. Cabs and rtiotor-cars ■were decKed out with T'qsetfo's of if a-. ture's colour, and the colour was net. lacking in ladies' hats and furbelows.
